There has been disturbing pictures making the rounds both on social media and some blogs of a year three student of the Department of Computer Science, University of Calabar (UNICAL), said to have almost lost his sight, last Friday after his lecturer, Mr. Chris Otu, of the Department of Economics, in anger, brought out his car keys and stabbed him on the face; the errant lecturer, the reports claim is currently at large in impunity bragging that nothing can be done to him.

Although CREyes is still grappling to gain full insight of the story, aspects of the incident have seemingly become shady and this may accrue from either the university authorities playing hide and seek on the matter due to the embarrassment this may cause the institution or the students are hiding it for fear of being victimized or other unclear reasons.

A student of the same department the incident took place, who blogged on the matter (and is currently in terrible fearing condition, part of the reason why his name is not mentioned here) narrated the story on his blog that the said Mr Otu was supposed to have classes with the students , which the victimized student heads as class representative, at the expected hour of 10.am at New CES Room 7 but rather showed up at 12-noon.

Students, As at the time the lecturer showed up, were already gathered waiting and generally apprehensive of the time the lecturer turned in and may have, including the said class representative, expressed certain anxiousness for him to postpone his class, when he (the victim) took white board markers to the lecturer as a regular routine; but his grumbling may not have gone down well with the lecturer in question when he let his hell loose and clammed on the student with repeated stabs amid dirty slaps.

After the abnormal act, the lecturer was said to have bragged about his actions directing the students who were now in terrible fear to go and find his records out about who he was in the past.

Mr Chris Otu is a lecturer with one of his eyes done away with, which students are generally speculating that he lost it way back as a feared cultist.

When contacted, the Dean of Students’ Affair, Prof. Eyong Ubana Eyong, although confirmed the incident but claimed he rather has a different version of the story that two students were involved in a scuffle and one stabbed the other adding that the university authorities are still investigating the matter to confirm the true parties involved.

The Student Union Government (SUG) president, Emmanuel Ajang could not be reached as all calls put to his line were not taken.

Also contacted by CREyes on the incident, the president of the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), UNICAL chapter, Ekemini Raymond, who said the information about the incident was still sketchy to him condemned the act describing it as inhuman.

“its against the school rule, its an inhuman act and it is against the holy book for a lecturer who is supposed to be a father to do such a thing to a student.”

It can be recalled that several of related impunities have existed in the past in the University of Calabar making it one of the universities in Nigeria with high degradation on students despite high security claims; it is expected that the university authorities do something about these recurring incidents to change the bad name that the institution already suffers.
