Football's Old Masters - Six Players Who Defied Their Age by franzis(m): 12:11am On Nov 24, 2014
Just hours before kick-off in their Champions League group game with Roma, Manchester City's savvy social media bods tweeted that "legendary player" Francesco Totti had never scored in England. They should have seen it coming, really.
Twenty-three minutes into the game the Roma legend surged through City's defence. When the ball was fed into his path, he jabbed it over Joe Hart, into the net and with it, into the record books. The 38-year-old became the oldest player ever to score in the Champions League.
So, let's look at Totti's record and while we're at it, some other football stars who defied their ageing legs.

Francesco Totti

Totti is among that rare breed of football legend - a one-club man. He made his debut in 1992 and has now played 564 games for Roma, with last night's goal being number 235 for the side. Roma have never been a powerhouse in Italy, with Totti only winning one Serie A, the equivalent of the Premier League, title during his career. But he's regularly named among the greatest players of his generation and was listed in Fifa's best 125 footballers of all-time, selected by Pele.Oh, and he also won the World Cup with Italy in 2006.And at 38 he's still going strong; playing 72 minutes in the game against Manchester city. And of his goal, Paul Scholes questioned if City had done their homework on Totti."He's been doing that for years," he said.

Ryan Giggs

No list of vintage old footballers would be complete without Ryan Giggs, the man whose record Totti broke last night.
Giggs is also a one-club man, having played in the Premier League with Manchester United for 22 consecutive seasons until he retired at the end of last season, aged 39.He made his debut in 1991 and scored in every campaign he played under Sir Alex Ferguson - that's 21 consecutive goal scoring season - a Premier League record. He also holds the record for the most Premier League winners medals (13) and most top flight appearances (632).Overall he won 25 major honours as a player, including four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues and is now assistant coach at United under Louis Van Gaal.

Roger Milla
A 42-year-old Roger Milla scores against Russia in the 1994 World Cup
Roger Milla is definitely not a one-club man. In a career spanning four decades he played for eleven different teams whilst also representing Cameroon over 100 times. He played professional football from 1968 until he finally retired in 1996, aged 44. In all but two of those 28 seasons Milla played more than 20 games, scoring 432 goals in the process.
During the Italia '90 World Cup, a then 38-year-old Milla scored four goals. After each goal he ran to the corner flag and performed what were thought to be the first ever dancing goal celebrations.Four years later he came on and scored against Russia at USA '94. He became the oldest ever outfield player to play in a World Cup and the oldest ever World Cup goal scorer. In 2006 he was named the greatest African footballer of the 20th century.

Sir Stanley Matthews
Sir Stanley Matthews played until past his 50th birthday
Only one player in the history of football has been knighted while he was still playing - Sir Stanley Matthews.
He is the oldest player ever to play in the top-flight of English football. His last game was for Stoke City, five days after his 50th birthday.
Just try and imagine that it: Ryan Giggs would have needed to carry on for more then a decade to beat that record.
His playing career itself lasted from 1932-1965. That's 33 years as a professional. Some players retire before they're 33!
He won 52 caps for England, his last coming when he was 42 years and 102 days old making him the oldest player ever to play for England.

Paolo Maldini
Paolo Maldini's number 3 shirt was retired by AC Milan
No other player has won the European Cup as many times as Paolo Maldini. He won five European titles during a career with AC Milan lasting 24 years. His first win came in 1989, and his fifth and final win was 18 years later in 2007. As if that wasn't enough, he also won Serie A seven times. He was playing at the top level of Italian football until his retirement in 2009, aged 41.Many players play less and less as they reach their older years, but Maldini played thirty times in his last season. He's is such a legend at Milan that once he retired, and as a mark of respect, the club also retired his beloved number 3 shirt - meaning no Milan player can ever wear that number again.

Peter Shilton
Peter Shilton played over 1000 games in his career
Now you may argue that it's easier for goalkeepers to play on as they get older, but not many players can say they've played 1000 professional games.Peter Shilton can.He made his debut for Leicester City in 1966 aged just 16 and didn't retire until 1997. He played his 1005th and final game at 47 years old having played for eleven different clubs.During that time he also represented his country 125 times, and is joint holder of the most World Cup clean sheets (10) with Fabien Barthez. Unfortunately for Shilton, he's probably best known for being the keeper beaten by Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal at the 1986 World Cup.
