Banana as a Crop
Bananas and plantains constitute the fourth most important global food commodity (after rice, wheat and maize) grown in more than 100 countries over a harvested area of approximately 10 million hectares, with an annual production of 88 million tonnes (Frison and Sharrock, 1999). The all year round fruiting habit of bananas puts the crop in a superior position in bridging the ‘hunger gap’ between crop harvests.

Plantain plants also grow best in bunches or groups because they protect each other from the harsh rays of the sun. It is important to create an environment where the plantain plants are sheltered either because they are bunched up together or there are other trees to protect them. It is important to maintain the humidity of the plantain plantation.

A REVIEW OF PLANTAIN PRODUCTION, PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS The soils in Nigeria fall into four zones: (a) the northern zone of sandy soils; (b) the interior zone of laterite soils; (c) the southern belt of forest soils; and (d) the zone of alluvial soils. Forest soils in the southern belt are naturally fertile as a result of dense vegetation cover. This zone also contains laterite soils. Forest soils are good for cocoa, palm and rubber production and are also the main soil types in the plantain and banana producing regions of Nigeria. Plantain production is mainly in the Southern states of Nigeria, which include Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Akwa-Ibom, Imo, Enugu, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states . Annual rainfall in these areas is usually above 1000 mm year-1, spread over 7 to 9 months. Plantain is transported to other parts of the country from these states.

Musa parasidiasca belongs to the natural order, plantaginaceae which contains more than 200 species, twenty-five or thirty of which have been reported. The common plantain (Plantango major) has broad, irregular oval leaves, abruptly contracted at the base into a long broad, channelled footstalk. The fully grown blade is 1.3–2.4 meters long and about two- third as broad, usually smooth, with several parallel veins. Plantain grows more than any other plant in compacted soils, is abundant beside paths, roadside and other areas with frequent soil compaction. It is also common in grassland and as a weed among crops. It is wind pollinated and propagates primarily by seeds which are held on the long narrow spikes which rise well above the foliage. The large diversity that occurred in plantain has resulted in a variety of cultivars.
