RESIDENTS and passers-by at a spot at Laranto in Jos North local council of Plateau State scampered for safety Thursday when security personnel confirmed an object carefully hidden in a polythene bag and placed in front of Fatima Primary School, Laranto, to be a time bomb.

The school is adjacent to the School of Electronics, former Tin City College, Laranto, which is also close to the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

An eyewitness and Bursar of the School of Electronics, Mr. John Ella, told The Guardian that a Fatima pupil of about eight years old spotted the strange object at abound 7.00a.m and informed his teachers, who did not waste time getting to see the object themselves.

From a reasonable distance, they confirmed that the object was indeed strange, so they contacted the Laranto Police Station, which men as well rushed down to the scene and confirmed the object a time bomb.

The police, according to him, cordoned the road leading to the school, while the Anti-Bomb Squad quickly came and defused it. Contacted, the Headmistress of the Fatima, who would not give her name for fear, promised to call back after speaking with her boss in the Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, Ella said the bomb must have been planted there very early, adding that an electricity power official saw the bomb but could not talk, and that when he eventually summoned courage to tell his colleagues, they dismissed the information as unrealistic until the police confirmed it a bomb.

“You don’t know how many lives would have been lost if the bomb had exploded!” Ella exclaimed. “There are two schools here and a NEPA headquarters. Only God knows what would have happened. It would have been a different thing entirely. You don’t know what this small boy has done to humanity.”

Reacting to the discovery, Spokesman of the Special Task Force (STF) in Plateau State, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, said the body was aware of the happening and that it was the soldiers who invited the Anti-Bomb Squad to defuse the bomb before it detonates.

“My advice to residents and people of the state is to be watchful and alert of their movement and action. They should not pick up any shining object like that. They should report strange objects to security personnel. People should be security conscious,” he said.

Another tragedy has been averted. Thanks to God; the kid that spotted the object and reported to his teachers; the teachers who reported to the police and the anti - bomb squad that defused the bomb.

I thank God for his mercies while praying for more. Protect your children from evil men who seek to destroy, they shall fail as many times as they try.
