In my final year in the university in 2001, I stumbled on an article titled “investing in cassava chip for export” Written by Mr G. Uba in one of the Nigerian news papers. I had great interest in the article because of my passion in agriculture and desire to contribute to poverty reduction in my local community and Nigeria in general
Most of our people are involved in agriculture and cassava been common in Nigeria with the realization of the multiplicity of it end uses; I considered it to be the right crop to accomplish my desire.
Since then I focused on training myself, research and search for information on how to best use this crop. Divinely my search culminated into the formation of a non-governmental organization: ALOGO CASSAVA FOUNDATION.
If you are passionate about agriculture and also have a desire to contribute to the reduction of poverty through agriculture and cassava production in particular, follow me as I take you through on how you can help a lot of people and also benefit through this NGO.

PROJECT RATIONALE

Nigeria with the present population of over 170 million has undergone severe economic hardship for the past three decades. The result is a decline in the nation’s overall prosperity and a concomitant reduction in job opportunity. During this period, various sections of the economy has deteriorated to a very low level, unemployment rates and poverty level has increased drastically with a gross domestic product (GDP) of under 50%, high inflation rate, Nigeria has not been able to compete in the global arena.
The argument by most Nigerians is that the diversification of the nation’s economy from an entirely petroleum dependent one to areas like manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, solid minerals is the only way to alleviate the present situation and put smiles on the faces of the masses.
Agriculture which was the bedrock of the Nigerian economy in the 1960’s and 1970’s has been relegated to the back ground. Thousands of graduates from Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education find themselves in the growing banking industries and less in the agricultural sector. While Nigeria continue to import food into the country. The agricultural sector among other sectors has the potential for providing numerous employment opportunities, increase food supply, increase the nation’s foreign exchange and brings a lot of benefits to Nigeria. The present peasant way of farming must be upgraded to mechanize farming with assistance given to farmers through extension services, adequate and prompt supply of farm inputs, financial assistance and subsidies. The increased farm products would increase the food need of the growing population and excess would be processed by small scale agro processing industries for consumption, industrial and export purpose.
With the enormous comparative advantage that Nigeria has in root and tuber production especially cassava production it therefore makes economic sense for the country to place more emphasis in this area of agriculture in which it obviously leads the world.
The federal government through its cassava transformation programme is committed to growing a new generating of farmers that would take cassava production as a business embracing modern method of production and emphases on value chain addition.
It is against the backdrop of contributing to development of Nigeria through cassava utilization that the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Alogo cassava foundation (ACF) was formed to promote, assist and encourage the production, processing and marketing of cassava in Africa, particularly Nigeria leading to creation of jobs, poverty eradication and industrialisation of the continent.
Value chain addition in cassava production and indeed in any agricultural commodity is the key to a sustainable increase in production and the various benefits that follow it.

ALOGO CASSAVA FOUNDATION VISION/MISSION STATEMENT:

To assist, promote and encourage the production, processing and marketing of cassava products in Africa, particularly in Nigeria leading to job creation, poverty alleviation and industrialization of the continent.

OBJECTIVES.

• Organize graduate youths train them in modern method of cassava production and help in linking them up with finance and the various inputs needed for large scale cassava production.
• Train youth most especially graduates on the various opportunities available in the cassava value chain addition which includes; production, processing and marketing, assisting them to be involved thereby making them gainfully employed.
• Help individuals, communities, local governments and state governments in the establishment of small scale cassava processing factories.
• Conducting feasibility report and business plan on the production, processing and marketing of cassava.
• Supply/ linkage of cassava processing factories to raw materials i.e. cassava fresh roots.
• Linkage of cassava processing factories to markets for their products.
• Supply / linkage of farmers to inputs such as agrochemicals, cassava step cutting, fertilizer e.t.c.
• Procurement of cassava processing machinery for individuals, communities, local and state governments.
• Consultancy on increase in profitability and performance of small scale cassava Processing factories.
• Provision / linkage to land for large scale mechanized modern method of cassava production.
• Provision / linkage to tractor hiring services for large scale cassava production.
• Help in securing loans for the establishment of cassava processing factories.
• Analysis of soil, cassava fresh roots and processed cassava product.

PROGRAMMES/ACTIVITIES

ALOGO CASSAVA FOUNDATION FARMERS CO-OPERATIVES (ACFFC).

Organise gradates youths interested in cassava production into this co operatives, train them in modern mechanised method of cassava production and link them up with relevant inputs and market for their products.
We intended to have membership of this cooperative from all the state of the federation must especially in the areas were we have cassava processing facility.

Presently the cooperative is registered with a 38 membership in Abuja, we have open an account with the bank of agriculture and the members are making a monthly contribution towards the production of cassava for 2015 planting season. Bank of agriculture intended to give ACFFC a loan of N200, 000 per hectare to enable perform the farming activity for next year.

We have arrangement with local community in Massaka, Nassarawa state to lease 20 hectare of land for the purpose we intend to make arrangement for more hectare of land. The foundation choose the location since it is close to joeberg cassava processing factory .we intend to lease more land for ACFFC to accommodate the members that would join. Every member is to cultivate a minimum of one hectare.
We are set to visit some local governments in selected states so they can help us lease about 200 hectares of land in their states for cassava production in 2016.

ACF is set to expand ACFFC to other states in the country but wish to concentrate its activities in the following state in the first two years Nassarawa, Niger, kogi, Kaduna, Abuja and Benue. YOUTH CASSAVA BUSINESS TRAINING PROGRAMME.

We will be Organising Cassava value chain business training programmes for youths, graduates and NYSC so that they can be involved and be gainfully employed.

The value chain of cassava involve production, processing and marketing .the modern method of cassava production would be taught in seminars by the various professional volunteers in the production departments.
Seminars on how to set up small scale cassava processing factory for cassava starch, flour and chips would be organise for youths to be aware of the opportunity and take advantage of it.

Training in the processes of cassava to high quality cassava flour for use by bread manufactures for 20% substitutions in wheat as promoted by the federal government is to take place early next year 2015.

trained persons can gain employment in the upcoming cassava processing factories that would be established in different states by the federal government, the can also gain employment in privately owned cassava processing factory, ACF can involve their services, the can use the knowledge they have in cassava processing to convince interested investor to invest in the ideas, or they can go ahead and establish this industries if they have the financial ability.

CASSAVA PROCESSING PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE.

Under this initiative Individuals, communities, cooperatives, organisations, local governments; state government areas and funding organisation can come into partnership on shared equity bases to establish small scale cassava processing factories.

In 2015 ACF intend to bring together the various individuals, communities, cooperatives, organisations, local governments; state governments into partnership to set up a cassava flour processing factory in any of this state Nassarawa,kogi,Abuja,Niger and Kaduna.

This partnership could be financial or by contributing the various facilities that would be needed for the establishment of the factory .this equipment could be trucks, bore hole, land, factory building, generator etc to set up the processing factory.

SETTING UP CASSAVA PROCESSING FACTORIES.

We Conduct, write feasibility reports, business plan and help in the setting up small and medium scale cassava processing factories (cassava starch, cassava chips, high quality cassava (HQCF), adhesive, and ethanol e t c.).

AS A VOLUNTEER

Alogo cassava foundation has six departments the production, processing, marketing, and administrative, finance and training department. You can volunteer to work in any of the departments.

We has a total of 25 volunteers working in the various departments.
You too can volunteer to contribute to the development of the cassava sector in Nigeria and Africa in general.

Criteria for becoming a volunteer are that you should have OND, HND or degree holder in the following area
Agricultural engineering, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Chemistry, Agricultural Extension , Crop Production, Agronomy ,Business Administration,Economics,Accounting,Law and related disciplines

People are writing that they are interested in ACFFC but they are not in the locations that ACF want to operate in the next 3 years.For this locations ACF can only start ACFFC if the can get 10 peole there.if you are in these location and interested organise 10 people so you can get registered.
