Malete (Kwara) – Prof. AbdulRsheed Na’ Allah, Vice-
Chancellor, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, says he
has inaugurated a committee for the establishment of the
centre for Nollywood studies in the University.
Na’ Allah disclosed this on Monday, in his opening address at
the Conference on African Cinema, with the theme; “African
Cinema and the Supernatural”, organised by the University.
He said that when operational, the centre would be charged
with the responsibility of highlighting the role and effect of
Nollywood films in the society.
Na’ Allah said that the conference was part of the University’s
aim of building bridges between scholars and those who
promote culture outside the university.
The vice-chancellor said that the essence of the conference
was to redefine the progress made by the nation in terms of
arts and culture for the benefit of all.
“In 2010, the theme of the KWASU Conference on African
Cinema was “Nollywood: A Natural Cinema”, this year, it is
“Nollywood and the Supernatural’’.
He said the themes of both conferences showed the
commitment of the institution to the promotion of culture
through cinema.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Onookome Okome, Lecturer,
University of Alberta, Canada, said that the conference was
aimed at exploring how Nollywood could depict the
supernatural and its capacity in resolving problems.
He said that the centre being planned would be a focal point
where the meaning and relevance of Nollywood would be
studied. (NAN)
