Street Ot Full Review by funmo(m): 2:24pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
A month ago [11-11-2014], Olamide dropped his 4th studio album: STREET OT(overtake). It displaced m.i's chairman album off the iTunes chat immediately... funny enough, I reviewed chairman, now I'm reviewing the album that OTed chairman. Ola is no doubt one of the best artistes in this country. From his debut album in 2010 till this moment, he has consistently waohed us. From the time I.d cabasa hyped him on his Facebook statuses in early 2010 till date, I've had no reason to doubt Ola baby. ALL I REVIEW BELOW ARE MY OPINIONS... they are not necessarily correct and right....your own views amount to story for the gods. Seriously?!!! 1. Olamide ft Pasuma & Lil Kesh – Oga Nla Grade: A Genre: fuji hip-hop The album couldn't have started any more better. Oga nla's voice resonated strongly all through the hook. Ola gave us his mission statement. One that has guided him since his inception in the industry. As usual Lil Kesh had nothing to talk about. 2. Olamide – Zero Joy Grade: C Genre: Reggaeton Rap On this one, Ola goes Jamaican on the hook. & he addresses the same thing he usually addresses. With a flow that one could easily mistake for tongue- twisting, he does justice to the 1-verse(d) track. Another album intro I suppose. 3. Olamide – Blood Money Grade: B Genre: hip-hop Dope track. Laced with some raps and patois rap- singing. Hook was a reprise. Nicely-sung bridge. 3 dynamic verses. 4. Olamide – Ya Wa Grade: C Genre: Afro r n b (rap and blues) Ola always come with various degrees of concepts on his album. The love theme has resonated all through all his 4 albums. This party track goes hard in the typical Olamide's signature. 5. Olamide – Hood Rap Grade: C Genre: Hood-Pop Laced with some opera music as sample, which doubles as an underlying chorus. This track is where Ola "paras" for a variety of people. 6. Olamide – The Real MVP Grade: B Genre: Pop Ola never stops displaying his singing skills and versatility on albums. This party track seems average melodically , but the beats compensates for that. Only a real mvp can be this versatile. 7. Olamide ft Viktoh – Up In The Club Grade: D Genre: comedy-rap Lewd!!! Unserious!!! is how I describe this song. lewd!!! Viktoh gets funny on this one,& whatever language he sang in at the end of his verse I don't know. 8. Olamide ft Don Jazzy – Skelemba Grade: C Genre: Afro Obviously the chemistry between the Don and baddo isn't top-notch yet...mmaybe in subsequent collaborations. Skelemba is a Street lingo(whatever it means). Not too bad a collabo and joint. 9. Olamide – Prayer For client Grade: A Genre: hip-hop One of the realest songs on street ot. He samples an hausa undertone from Godwon's no days off the mixtape. This is the official y-y boys' anthem. And of course, only a y b n l can relate with his brothers. He wants all to "get money". 10. Olamide – Batifeori Grade: C Genre: "Gospel" At least, "mercy said no" was sampled on the chorus, albeit with a yoruba-accent. Gospel Djs will like this track. Here, he says his wishes come true (Batifeori) 11. Olamide ft Chinko Ekun & Lil Kesh – Bang Grade: D Genre: Southern hip-hop Trap beats are the in-thing in hip-hop right now. Chinko Ekun kicks off the track with madt badt lyrics and flows (HE SOUNDS LIKE BASE ONE). Lil Kesh though, below par again on this one. I've a feeling baddo decided to remove his own verse off the track. I think he did one. 12. Olamide – Goons Mi Grade: A Genre: Afro Pop His first single off the album, it kinda laid down the foundation for the street ot. Definitely a street anthem. He went hard on this one, bragging, then giving props to the streets for the support and fans' base he enjoys. Bajinotu!!! Pooka! 13. Olamide – 1999 Grade: A Genre: Trado Rap Argue from now till infinity of how baddo isn't a full- time rapper, and of how he shouldn't be termed an emcee, it won't yield nothing. His dad's close shave with death in 1999, which he narrates here brought out the grind in him. So whatever must be done, musically, lyrically or whateverly to get the dough must be done. Cest Fine! 14. Olamide – Falila Ketan Grade: B Genre: "Kegite" This would pass for the super eagles theme-songs we often hear most times, except if we change lyrics. Rated 18 and mild-lewd, it employs a high-tempo upbeat. That's all. Apologies to all the offended Falilas 15. Olamide ft Phyno – In My Circle Grade: C Genre: hip-hop The chemistry between these two is just baddoly phynomenal! Purely rap. And these two remind us why they are top two dialect-spitting emcees in 9ja. 16. Olamide – Alaaru Grade: A Genre: hip-hop The beat could be mistaken for an 007 theme song. Violin-strapped beats. Tight hook. My own favorite song off the track. Here, he prays for more money. Jawo!!! 17. Olamide ft Viktoh & Chinko Ekun – 100 To Million Grade: D Genre: hip-hop? Personally, persona personally!!! I don't dig viktoh, I just don't see his potentials no matter how hard I try to stare and look. That chorus was below below par par. Ola talks of his past and gives odes to his lost goons, and stresses the money ish. The Chinese Lion (chinko ekun) goes harder on his 2nd appearance on the album, I only hope he keeps going this hard. 18. Olamide – Story For The Gods Grade: A Genre: Afro pop This song generated some uproars online and morality got questioned. Articles and rejoinders flew all over blogs. But I'm sure the songs will win awards. I won't express my own views on the song. There won't be a need to. PS: The grade comes as a result of the song's acceptability and not it's message 19. Olamide ft Reminisce – Hustle Loyalty Respect Grade: A Genre: hip-hop toh badt My best song off the album(nt fav). From his hook and verse(s), Ola makes rap sweet and sweet rap. Boda Remilekun brings his always-sweet flows on this one. On here, they present the theme; hustle, loyalty and respect. The ibile boys ain't joking though. Whatever reminisce took before delivering those last breathless-eight bars though. 20. Olamide B-Banks – Possible Grade: C Genre: inspiration Ola sings on this one too. The claro brings a wide variety of inspiration, doesn't it? A new bank called B- banks features here. The song passes for a Qdot song. 21. Olamide ft Lil Keshi, Chuka, Chinko Ekun & Penenazi – Usain Bolt P Grade: B Genre: hip-hop Lil kesh & chinko Ekun appear for the 3rd time. The former doesn't really impress, or maybe I'm just a hater. Chinko Ekun is that spitter to watch out for 2015. Chuka,I think the ngt1 finalist, made some local raps here, and even pepenazi, a typical phone(tic)- rapper spits in yoruba here.(though I almost mistook him for loose kaynon) 22. Olamide – Eni Suun Grade: A Genre: hip-hop Eni sun (y'all won't sleep)? Really? My guy, I'm dozing already... . Ola tells us he won't ever turn down, he wants to pass a message across: HIS CONSISTENCY AND HARDGRIND!!! An album couldn't have ended any more better. (Na so I talk for track 1) All views are mine... those that know me won't be surprised on how I expressed them. So don't hate and don't bite. That was my own side of the story (for the gods ). I rap, I write, I crack jokes, I sleep and I tweet @adefunmiloye |
