While Gambian President Jammeh was out of the country, armed men attacked the Gambian presidential palace in a coup attempt.
Armed men attacked the Gambian presidential palace in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

AFP reported that soldiers from the presidential guards attempted to stage a coup. An unnamed officers said to the news agency, "They wanted to overthrow the regime."

Gambian president Yahya Jammeh was not in the country at the time.

The Deputy Head of the National Intelligence Agency, Louis Gomez, refused to comment on the events Tuesday morning.

A few days ago, Gambia was removed from the U.S.'s list of sub-Saharan African countries eligible for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), due to its “lack of progress with respect to human rights, rule of law, political pluralism and the right to due process.”
