Sony isn't the only one

Sure the Sony hack has taken up all the headlines of late, but there is a laundry list of other breaches that have taken place all over the world. Here are a few incidents in the past couple of years that resulted in the release of password information. This list was compiled in a report by researchers Norbert Tihanyi, Attila Kovács, Gergely Vargha and Adám Lénárt.

1. Gmail.


4.93 million Gmail usernames and passwords leaked to a Russian Bitcoin forum. The user details are more than three years old. The retrieving method is suspected to be multiple individual targeted hacks rather than one big data leak.


2. Domino's Pizza


The Rex Mundi hacking group stole details from users in France and Belgium from Dominos Pizza database. User's details included 650,000 passwords, email, home addresses and phone numbers.


3. AOL


AOL says that a significant number of user accounts were affected. It was reported that those responsible for the security breach were able to gain access to email addresses, postal addresses, and address book contact information, as well as encrypted versions of passwords and answers to security questions.


4. eBay


145 million eBay accounts were compromised in a massive hack, including email addresses and encrypted passwords.


5. MacRumors


MacRumors user forums were breached by hackers who may have acquired cryptographically protected passwords belonging to 860,000 users.


6. Adobe

Over 150 million breached records from Adobe have surfaced online. Hackers obtained access to a large swathe of Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords and removed sensitive information (i.e. names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, etc.). It affected approximately 38 million Adobe customers.


7. Ubuntu

Hack exposed e-mail addresses, password data for 2 million Ubuntu Forum users. The discussion forum for the operating system was compromised leaking personal details and passwords. The passwords were cryptographically scrambled using the MD5 hashing algorithm.


8. Drupal

Drupal reset login credentials after a hack exposed password data. Malicious files placed on association.drupal.org servers via a third-party application. Usernames, email addresses, country information and crypto-graphically hashed passwords were exposed.


9. Scribd


Scribd, an online library, admits to network intrusion, passwords have been breached. The hack resulted in a few hundred thousand stolen passwords.


10. LivingSocial


50 million usernames and passwords lost as LivingSocial’s special offers site was hacked. Online criminals gained access to user names, email addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords for 50 million people.


11. Evernote

Evernote asked its 50 million users to reset their passwords following an attempt to hack the note-taking network.
