The Ballon d'or / FIFA world best player gala night and awards come up in less than two weeks' times, January 12 precisely (and that's my birthday by the way). All footballing eyes are on the three nominees, two of whom occupy a different planet of theirs as far as soccer is concerned, and the other, a goalie that comes once in ten generations.

Of the three, C.Ronaldo had the best of football year as far as club's exploits go. Nuer had a better year for club, best year for country, and them merciless one had a flop of a year in club football and a not-too-bad a year for country football. As far as norms and traditions are concerned, the world best player awards proceeding a world cup is often determined by the happenings at the world cup. If that jinx would be broken will be determined by the announcement of C.Ronaldo as winner, for he had a poor world cup outing by all standards, no thanks to an injury that lingered into the world cup. But Real Madrid won it all, and all thanks to CR7. Off the strength of those club's trophies, he is the most favorite for the award. He has two Ballon o dor awards to himself already, a result of his hardworks for two different top clubs, will he add a third?

Messi had a bad footballing year for Barcelona F.C, his worst so far. Not a single worthy trophy for the Catalunya guys. Too bad. As a fan of almost a decade "fanship", I couldn't believe the season ended trophyless. The world cup on the other hand was different for the lion. If motherluck had been for him, he would have won the world cup, and with that won everything "winnable" in professional football. But the German machines wouldn't let him, and a certain Nuer's immense contribution to the team made that happen. He was voted best player of the tournament, a decision that still ignites debates amongst soccer fans. With four back-to-back Fifa world best player awards, this isn't new waters to him.

Nuer made name for himself in South America within the 30 days the world cup held. A goalie that acts like a defender , kicks the ball more than he catches/grabs it ,and stays outside his box 80% of the game is a strange sight to the South Americans, it was. Conceding few goals and making incredible saves, Nuer was a sight to behold for Germany. He literally kept the Samba boys at a hand's length during the infamous 7-1 trashing. His club exploits in Bayern Munich didn't go unnoticed either, they had the league cup to show for his goalkeeping brilliance. A sweepkeeper, and even a sweetkeeper, Manuel Nuer is one force that won't be forgotten in between the sticks.


The countdown is already on. We can't wait. The votes of national teams' captains and coaches, and those of selected football journalists had all been cast, and the D-day would soon be upon us.
