TACKLING SOME UNCOMMON INTERVIEW PROBLEMS
1. PUNCTUALITY – wake up early and set out to the venue on time. You should be time conscious
2. APPEARANCE – first impression counts a lot when it comes to an interview so ensure that your mode of dressing is formal. Wear conservative suit, subdued colours, little jewellery, low heels shoes for ladies, well polished shoe and a little perfume or deodorant
3. CONFIDENCE – “Confidence is a success often induced real success by Sigmund Frend”. A smile on your face will not be a bad idea and always make eye contact with interviewer(s). Sit up, focus on the interviewer(s) and respond accordingly. Enthusiasm is what the interviewer wants to see. Be a good listener, seek clarification if a question is not clear, speak clearly and audibly when responding. Do not smoke or drink to an interview.
4. RESEARCH - the interview is not the time for research, just carry out a research about the company’s products and service, organization’s structure and other key information about the company. Other issues you should find out include:
 Find out how the business operates and whether it is expanding, its main competitors and any special characteristics which you find particularly interesting.
 What the company produces or sell
 Whether the company is successful
 The company’s future plans
 The location of the company, its headquarter/regional branches
 The company’s major competitors
 The company’s number of employees
 The company’s cultures and current events
You can get the above information from national and local papers, business directories, financial journals, company’s annual reports, the company’s website or better still go to the company’s office.
A little homework will stand you in good stead and apart from anything else, it is complimentary to your future employers if you can show an informed interest in their activities.
