A Yoruba Poem

Ise Logun ise

Ise Logun ise [Work is the antidote for poverty]
... Mura si se re, ore mi [Work hard and work smart, my friend]
Ise la fi ndeni giga [Hard and smart work brings success]
Bi a ko ba reni fehin ti [When there is no one to rely on]
Bi ole la ri [Its like we are lazy]
Bi a ko ba reni gbekele, [When there is no one to trust]
A te ra mo se ni. [We focus more on our work]
Iya re le lowo lowoh [Your mother might be rich]
Baba re le lesin lekan [Your father might own a thousand and one horses]
Ti o ba gbojule won [If you rely on them]
O te tan ni mo so fun o [In truth, you might be on sinking ground]

Apa lara igupa ni ye kan [families are like the arm, while extended family are like the elbow]
B'aiye ba fe o loni [If you are loved by the world today]
Ti o ba lowo lowo, won a tun fe o lola [If you are still rich, they will love you tomorrow as well]
Abi ko wa nipo atata [If you have an esteemed position]
Aiye a ye o si terin terin [You will be honored with "fake"laughter]
Je ki o deni ti ra ngo [If you unfortunately loose your money or position]
Ko ri bi won ti nyin mu si o [They'll turn their back on you]

Iya mbe fomo ti ko gbon [There is suffering for the foolish child]
Ekun mbe fomo ti nsare kiri [and there is sorrow for the child that have no plan or vision]
Mafowuro sere ore mi [Don't waste your formative years, my friend]
Mura sise ojo nlo. [work hard and plan well now, because time waits for no one]

Nice interpretation. Even though we were forced to recite it and know the meaning yet so many children of Yoruba extraction are relying on toutism and baba ijebu to make it in live. Even the govt too are encouraging toutism

HARDWORK:Antidole for Poverty

Hardwork is the antidole for poverty

So my dear friend you've got to work hard

Hardwork is the key to success

Where no helper is found

Real progress becomes a difficult task

And since you have no godfather

You'd better get on with your job

Perhaps your mother has lots of money

And your father,a row of mansions

If that's all you can show for living

You are already on the losing side

For without making any personal venture

You cannot expect any gain

For the fruit of your labour

Eventually produces eternal and enduring flavour

From your labour comes your true reward

The world will love you

If you have lots of money

But such love depends on your consistent wealth

Or if perchance you occupy a noble position

Friends will throng you like bees

However when tragedy strikes

That time, friends become very scarce

Education can also launch you to great heights

So make sure you take advantage of it

If you see hordes of people deriding knowledge

Don't be found among such critics

Ignorance surely breeds suffering and hardship

And truancy is the mother of regret

So don't play away your precious youth

Work hard, for the night is coming.

Apa lara (arm is affirmed to be of family's member) Igupa ni ye kan(elbow is affirmed to be of children of same mother).

Literary Translation are below:
Apa lara: arm is family "member"
Igupa li/ni iye kan : elbow is of "same mother"

Cheers

In most cases, hardwork is not an antidote for poverty.
If na by hardwork, most abokis support to be the richest.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

CHARACTER

Enhance your character, my friend,
Prosperity could depart from one’s home,
And beauty could retreat from people’s bodies.

Today’s rich could become poor tomorrow,
Opulence is like ocean’s surfs; it is like ocean’s waves,
They come and go from one’s home as they please;
But, only good character follows one to the grave.

Money is not everything to anyone,
Good character is the beauty of a mortal,
What if you are wealthy without good character?
Who would trust you with something serious?

Perhaps, you are a gorgeous woman,
If you are far from societal norms,
Who would marry you as a wife?

Or you are a fraudulent person,
May be you are well educated;
Who would transact business with you?

Enhance your character, my friend,
In the absence of character, education is a waste;

The whole world appreciates a well-mannered person.

_Poetry by the late Chief J.F. Odunjo, renowned Yoruba playwright, poet, politician, and statesman – from one of his popular Alawiye series._

This poem was recited in those days by primary school children in the old Western Region.

Not anymore.

And we wonder what has happened sad
