Apple recently unleashed its first phablet on the
world and it’s an impressive device. But
Samsung more or less invented the phablet and
though its Note 4 is its flagship phablet the
upcoming Galaxy A7 has a more premium and
stylish build, making it a valid alternative to the
iPhone 6 Plus. So how do these two stylish
devices compare? Read on to find out.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Build
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is an incredibly good
looking phone, with an aluminium frame and
curved edges leaving it looking and feeling great.
Its dimensions are impressive too, as while it’s
large at 158.1 x 77.8mm it’s only 7.1mm thick.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 is also clad in metal,
but the shape is less rounded and it doesn’t
come across as quite as premium as the iPhone
6 Plus. It’s also lighter at just 141g (the 6 Plus
is 172g). Light can sometimes be good but with
a large screen and a metal build a certain
amount of weight is expected and without it a
phone can feel cheap.
What it does have going for it though is a
relatively compact build, at 151 x 76.2 x 6.3mm,
so it’s shorter, slimmer and thinner than the
iPhone 6 Plus, despite having the same size
screen. Those are all points in its favour, but
overall the iPhone 6 Plus is probably the better
looking phone.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Display
The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch 1080 x 1920
IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 401 pixels
per inch, while the Samsung Galaxy A7 has a
5.5-inch 1080 x 1920 Super AMOLED display
with a pixel density of 401 pixels per inch. So the
two phones have screens of exactly the same
size and resolution but they’re not completely
identical.
The actual display technology is different, with
the iPhone 6 Plus using IPS LCD and the Galaxy
A7 using Super AMOLED. The 6 Plus delivers
natural colours and good contrast and while we
haven’t gone hands-on with the Galaxy A7 yet
using Super AMOLED means it’s likely to have
brighter, richer colours, but potentially less
accurate ones.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Power
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus has a 1.4GHz dual-core
Apple A8 processor and 1GB of RAM, while the
Samsung Galaxy A7 has either a Snapdragon 615
processor if you buy the dual SIM model or an
Exynos 5 processor if you buy the single SIM
one. Both are octa-core chips, but the
Snapdragon one has four cores clocked at
1.5GHz and four at 1.0GHz, while the Exynos
one has four cores at 1.8GHz and four at
1.3GHz.
So the Exynos 5 version should be faster and
that’s likely to be the model that lands in the
UK, as we rarely get dual SIM phones. Whichever
one we get though it will have 2GB of RAM.
On paper then the Samsung Galaxy A7 should be
a fair bit more powerful than the iPhone 6 Plus,
but in practice we’d be surprised if it can match
that phones slick performance.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Camera
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus only has an 8 megapixel
camera but it’s capable of taking highly
impressive photos. That’s helped by the fact
that it has optical image stabilisation and a
dual-LED flash, to ensure colours stay natural
even when shooting with artificial light. It can
also shoot 1080p video at 60fps and has a 1.2
megapixel front-facing camera.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 has a 13 megapixel
main snapper, but there’s no optical image
stabilisation here and only a single LED flash. Its
video recording skills are more limited too as it’s
capped at 1080p at 30fps. The front-facing
camera is a solid 5 megapixels though, so while
its main camera is less impressive than the one
on the iPhone 6 Plus it should be better for
selfies.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Battery life, memory and connectivity
The iPhone 6 Plus has a fairly large 2915 mAh
juice pack which can last for up to 24 hours of
talk time or 384 hours of standby. The Samsung
Galaxy A7 has a rather smaller 2600 mAh
battery. Samsung hasn’t stated how long lasting
the battery is but we’d expect it won’t hold up
as well as the iPhone 6 Plus.
The 6 Plus comes in a choice of 16, 64 or 128GB
of storage, but that’s not expandable, while the
Galaxy A7 has just 16GB of storage but it also
has a microSD card slot with support for cards of
up to 64GB.
Both phones support Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G and Bluetooth
4.0, but the Galaxy A7 also supports NFC and
while the iPhone 6 Plus does have an NFC chip
it’s only useable for Apple Pay.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy A7 –
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy A7 looks like a promising
handset, with one of Samsung’s most premium
builds yet, but it doesn’t quite have flagship
specs and while the screen is a match for the
iPhone 6 Plus its performance and camera are
unlikely to be.
It also still doesn’t look quite as good as the
iPhone 6 Plus and lacks the Touch ID fingerprint
scanner of Apple’s phone. On the other hand it’s
also likely to be a lot cheaper. The iPhone 6 Plus
starts at £619, which is pricey even for a
flagship and while the price of the Galaxy A7
hasn’t yet been confirmed its specs should
position it below most flagships, so we’d expect
it will cost under £500, possibly well under.
As such it doesn’t need to match up to the
iPhone 6 Plus in other ways. If you want a
flagship phablet and don’t want an iPhone then
the Note 4 is a better choice, but if you want to
save some money or get a more premium build
you’re unlikely
