People Expect Take Away Food: If you have been to a couple of Nigerian weddings then you shouldn’t be too surpirsed when you see people requesting for where to buy polythene bags. Apparently your wedding is only a success and the talk of town when your guests have had enough to eat and have excess to take home to their family and loved ones. A popular Nigerian song goes thus “a o je aje yo, a o tu di lole.” This roughly translated simply means that ‘we would eat to our satisfaction and still have more to take home.’

Single Guests Are Expected to Marry Next: It is not uncommon to see aged people plaguing the single folks with questions about when they are getting wedding invitees from them. If your friend is getting married and you are acting as a best man, grooms man, chief bridesmaid or bridesmaid, it is in your best interest to either be engaged or have a doting lover around. People never get tired of asking the question of when it is going to be your turn.

No Ankara, No Food: Another popular slang in Nigeria concerning weddings is the Yoruba saying that ‘O wo ankara o je semo.’ This roughly translated simply means that if you are not putting on the chosen attire for the wedding, then there is no food for you. As a way of trying to identify party crashers, Nigerians have cleverly employed the method of using rhyming attires to know the gate crashers. If you are considered a party crasher then don’t expect to have food getting to your side.

Souvenirs are Selectively Distributed: More often than not, you will see a group of women and sometimes even men coming back from an occasion carrying all sorts of gifts. From buckets, rechargeable lamps, hand-fans to what have you depending on the financial strength of the couple. But one thing that is worthy of laugh is usually the struggle to make sure that you get a wedding souvenir to attest that you attended. Most times the person sharing looks at faces and makes sure that his or her own people get first before ‘strangers’ are served.


Come With Plenty Money: Ever been to a traditional Yourba wedding? If yes then you can relate to this. As a groom and grooms man you are expected to have a boxed up pocket on your wedding day. The bride is usually ‘flown in’ from overseas, her veil is paid for before it can be revealed, and you literally have to spray everything that comes your way with money. Generally as a guest in any Nigerian wedding however, if you don’t want to be left behind, you are adviced to come with money to spray the newly wedded couple.
