The African Cup of Nations has kicked off amidst fears of delays and finding a country to host the games in 2015. For the second time in three years, Equatorial Guinea is hosting the African Cup of Nations from January 17 to February 8. The oil-rich central African nation, formerly known as Spanish Guinea has grown to become the richest country per capita in Africa. There are traces of its Spanish past spread across the country especially in the major cities of Malabo and Bata.

Equatorial Guinea is the only African nation where Spanish is an official language so if you’re looking to get a taste of Afro-Spanish culture while enjoying an intense game of football, take a trip to this beautiful country.

The games will be held in four locations around the country, Bata, Malabo, Ebebiyin and Mongomo. Each one of the cities offers a unique travel experience for tourists and football enthusiasts. Jovago.com Africa’s No 1 booking portal will help you decide what city to visit on your next adventure.

Bata

As the largest city in Equatorial Guinea, Bata is known for its nightlife and market traditions. A quiet aura surrounds the city but at night it comes to life with its numerous bars and clubs. It’s deep rooted African influences are abound in the marketplace where you can buy local foods and attires.

Bata is located on the island of Rio Muri and is only 45 minutes from the capital city of Malabo by air. If you choose to travel by road, you will be greeted by lovely white sand beaches along the coastline.

Estadio de Bata

It is the largest stadium in Equatorial Guinea befitting for a city like Bata. It was constructed in 2007 with enough seats to hold 35,700 people. It has since hosted several games at the African Cup of Nations.

Malabo

Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea is a busy city located on the Northern coast of Bioko Island. Due to its coastal location, Malabo is frequently plagued with foggy weather but that won’t deter you from having a great time. The streets of Malabo are filled with Spanish architecture creating a picturesque view of the entire city. You can visit the volcano at the edge of the city or try out one of the various restaurants providing excellent French cuisine.

Nuevo Estadio de Malabo

Also constructed in 2007, the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo stadium is the largest stadium after Estadio de Bata. It seats 15,000 people and will host nine games in the African Cup of Nations 2015.

After a game at the stadium, take a walk on the beach or visit the famous Malabo Cathedral for a memorable experience

Mongomo

Mongomo is a small town in Wele-Nzas Province in mainland Equatorial Guinea. It is located at the outskirts of Equatorial Guinea, near the border with Gabon.

Mongomo serves as secluded replica of the city of Malabo, with views of Spanish colonial architecture as you visit the little towns which are inhabited by only 8,000 people. It is cloudy and rainy most months throughout the year.

Estadio de Mongomo

This stadium has a capacity of 15,000 and will host the best group of the African Cup of Nations, featuring Ghana, South Africa, Algeria and Senegal.

Ebebiyin

The capital of the Kié-Ntem Province in Equatorial Guinea. It lies on the border between Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Cameroon, and is the final stop of three major transport routes coming from Bata in Equatorial Guinea, Yaounde in Cameroon and several cities in Gabon. Staying in Ebebiyin to watch the game would allow you to move across countries and explore other African cities.

Nuevo Estadio de Ebebiyin

It is a multi-sports stadium in Ebebiyin and can hold up to 8,000 people. It hosted the Copa de la Primera Dama final and will host several games at the African Cup of Nations tournament.
