The time before Muhammad in Mecca was known as the PERIOD OF IGNORANCE in islam. There is no record that islam was ever practiced in Arabia prior to Muhammad's islam. There was a god named Allah and was one of the 360 idols in Kaaba. This same allah was the one re-introduced by Muhammad. Gabriel that spoke to him was the spirit of the god (allah).
