Learning how to grow spiritually is a life-long journey which occurs as you read and apply God's Word to your life. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 teaches us, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." In order for spiritual growth to occur, we must be taught, rebuked, corrected, and trained by God's Word. Then we will be thoroughly equipped for every good work. What sinful nature? According to the Bible stories, there is no such thing but instead men who refuse to submit their will to obeying instead God's Will. What greater example to counter this idea of a sin nature is there than the example of Abel, as told of in Genesis. Abel was born a twin -his twin brother Cain - yet Abel submitted his will and obeyed God instead. He was declared righteous by God as a result of this. Cain, his brother, instead refused to obey the same commandments given Him of God.

If this "sin nature" skipped some in the first generation, and is revealed to be a matter of choice than of "nature", isn't that evidence that there indeed isn't such a thing as a "sin nature" but instead a problem of egos where men and obedience of God's commandments are concerned?

I would add a couple of things that I think are critical to the subject:

1. Spiritual growth does not come merely by reading the Bible. The Bible is not an open book to everyone. It demands that the reader also submit to a pastor-teacher who is gifted with a teaching gift and trained to teach the Scriptures.

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Eph 4:11 — Eph 4:13 (NIV)

2. Although, as you rightly pointed out, spiritual growth is not competitive, we are to be motivated by one another to grow spiritually everyday. We ought to use every opportunity that the Lord gives us to progress spiritually and bear fruit for Him. If we see someone who is doing it well, we are right to be motivated to do just as well. If someone is doing poorly, we are right to encourage and exhort them to do better. If we are doing well, we are right to rejoice in that gift of the Lord's. If we are doing poorly, we are right to be challenged by those who are doing better.

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
