The home branch of the Great Ife
Alumni Association of Obafemi Awolowo University on Wednesday
held a symposium titled ‘STUDENT
UNIONISM AND EDUCATIONAL
DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA’.

The Chairman of the Home Branch
Association, Prof. Akinloye Farinde
explained that the need for the theme
came up as a result of the conviction
that the students must be involved in
the affairs and administration of educational system and because it is
believed that this is the only platform
on which the students can be integrated into the system.

The symposium had different
discussants like the Dean, Division of
Students Affairs, Dr Lateefah Durosinmi, the Director, CDL OAU, Prof. Bode Asubiojo, SSANU OAU Chairman, Comrade Demola Oketunde, Representative of ASUU OAU, Dr Ibiyemi, Representative of NAAT OAU, Mr T.A Adesiyan, President, Students Union OAU, Ibikunle Isaac M. and Former President OAU cum activist, Adeola Soetan make submissions on the topic of discourse.

Dr (Mrs) Durosinmi explained that there must be cooperation between the management and the Students’ Union to ensure peaceful coexistence on campus.
She posited that the main problem
facing the development of tertiary
institutions is the fact that Student
Unionism has lost its intellectual nerve thus submitted to raw physical energy.
She explained further that there can be no meaningful educational development until the Students’ Leaders start seeing the School’s Management as partners in progress and not the enemies they have termed them to be.

Some of the speakers were of the
opinion that Student Unionism needs
surgical operations so that they can stop fighting for selfish interests and also contribute to National development as Unionism exists both for solving internal and National problems that may arise.

An advice was given to Students
Leaders to avoid violence in their
articulation of problems and that they
should foster a good relationship
between themselves and Sister Unions like ASUU, SSANU, NASU and such other bodies as this would greatly help in lending credence to whatever the Students are clamoring for.

In his submission, the President, SU,
OAU explained that the Students Union can never help in fostering peaceful coexistence if students are not part of the decision making body of the school.
He explained further that the course of things would not change if the
management continues to be autocratic and if they still have the rights to instill measures they feel are good for maintaining law and order. He ended his part on a note of appeal to the Sister Unions to help in clamoring for the reinstatement of the suspended OAU6.

The President, Students Union, OAU
during the 1990/1991 Administration,
Comrade Adeola Soetan explained no
Student Leader can be successful
without ideological colorations and that any Students’ Union must be
theoretically grounded to understand
the yearnings of the students. He ended with a position that radical unionism pays the University Management better as their positions will be made known through the students leaders without
causing problems.
