Nigerian girl emerges best graduating student in Canterbury varsity, wins three awards

A Nigerian female student, Gabriella Onyidobara Benamaisia, 23, has emerged the best graduating student in this year's convocation of the Canterbury Christ Church University, England.

The Bayelsa-born lady graduated with a first class honours degree in social science and bagged three awards for her efforts.

Benamaisia promised to come back home immediately after the completion of her Master's degree in criminology to contribute her quota to the development of her local community, the Niger Delta and the country as a whole.

She was given the awards for Outstanding Performance and Best Graduating Student. In addition, she also won the award as the Xcel Student of the Year, an award instituted by Xcel, Britain's first and largest careers e-magazine for multi-ethnic and minority group students.

Canterbury Church University, founded in the 1960s, has about 14, 500 students with campuses in Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Broadstairs, Chatam and Folkestone.

According to a citation by the university, Benamaisia, an extraordinary student, started her academic journey from Nigeria . She attended a nursery and primary school in Lagos before proceeding to Our Lady of Fatima, Port Harcourt , Rivers State , for her secondary education between 1995 and 2001. She then left for London for her A-Level after which she gained admission to the university.

The university also described Benamaisia, whose father works with DHL Nigeria, as hardworking, cerebral and a good team player. She was presented with the awards during the 2008 convocation of the university on November 28, 2008.

Also, in the letter of commendation signed by the institution's Programme Director for Social Science, Dr. Lynda Saunders, who is also a principal lecturer in Benamaisia's department, the Nigerian was extolled for her performance. During the convocation, she was also included in the order of ceremony as a mark of honour for her excellent performance.
