OPINION: Why Should NFF Not Retain Stephen Keshi As Coach Of The Super Eagles by amoss: 1:15pm On Feb 13, 2015
Nigerians home and abroad await the appointment of a new coach for the senior
national team, the Super Eagles.

Recent reports have it that the NFF technial committee members are currently deliberating
on filling the vacant position. chairman of the technical committee of the Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF), Chief Anynsi Agwu says his committee had passed its recommendations
on the reappointment of Stephen Keshi to the executive committee of the federation.

''We deliberated on Keshi’s contract renewal and have made our recommendations to the
NFF board,'' Felix Anyasi-Agwu, chairman of the NFF technical committee, said after
their meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Did you just say Keshi again! Yes Stephen Okechukwu Keshi. Soon and very soon this
announcement will be made and Nigerians will know who will take the Eagles to the next level.

Although we also hear that his the new deal will contain clauses that will be make him
answerable to the technical committee. Also, the former Mali and Togo boss will work
with a backroom staff picked by the NFF.

Coach Keshi's contract lapsed after the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup and was asked to return
to lead the team to the recently concluded African Cup of Nations won by Cote d'voire in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
You know the rest. We simply did not qualify to play in that tournament and
the 'ifs' began to fill the papers. If only Nigeria had qualified, If only, if only.

From his football playing days to his present status as a coach, ''the big boss''
as coach keshi is fondly called, has experienced all the ironies of the round leather
game applauds, adoration, successes, controversies and lately failure.

Many are quick to accuse him of being money conscious, power drunk, arrogant,
tactically incompetent and placing mediocrity over merits.

Here's the thing. What exactly is Keshi not getting right aside the fact that he failed to lead
the team to Malabo? Or could it be said that Nigerians just want him out going by the usual
hiring and firing? This same Coach won the nations cup in 2013, led the team to
Confederation Cup in Brazil, qualified Nigeria to play in the world cup where he made the knock-out stages.

Let's just say the name Stephen Keshi means different things to different
people in this football loving nation called Nigeria. What then do you think about his reported return?

I do not think Coach Keshi should sign a new contract with the NFF. What I liked most about Coach Keshi's reign was him being able to pick players he liked. Remember the kick against Aaron Samuel. One of the things that made us have a trophy drought with the Super Eagles (Note Olympics is not a trophy) was the NFF dictating the players the coach must use.

Remember Bora built a team of mostly home based boys that were led by Samson Siasia. The team won the friendly Carlsberg Cup in 1998. That team was broken down by the NFF to field their player. Siasia who did well in the friendlies was dropped for Yekini.

The technical committee of the NFF brings back the NFF list and puts the Coach whether Coach Keshi or any other out of Control. I hope Coach Keshi does not sign the deal and let the technical committee coach.

As usual bro. Celebrating mediocrity and sub-standardness.

Thank God you are not at the helm of top affairs at the NFF or you could turn Nigerian football in to an eye-saw mediocre show of shame by giving coaches like Keshi thumbs up to select players wrongly.

@ topic

Keshi should forget the Nigerian job and look elsewhere. He made terrible errors that ruined our football and he obviously does not learn. We are happy we won the 2013 cup with him but that should not be a ransom with which he would hold us down while continually performing below par.

It is easy to stand up and point your fingers at someone and call him sub standard. However, unlike your ideology, Coach Keshi actually made a lot of right choices when it came to player selection. For instance, he made Moses a regular star of our team. He gave Sone Aluko the chance to break into the team. Emenike became a force under him. Oshaniwa was a revelation. Michael Babatunde surprised many including me at the World Cup. He gave Oboabona and Omeruo their breaks. His addition of Aaron Samuel to the team was criticised by many but he turned out to be a brilliant finisher.

Coach Keshi is not as bad as you guys make him. He was actually a man who brought change, development and competitiveness to our team. If you think someone like me who can see how difficult it was to change a team who could not qualify for the Nations Cup to Champions, will not recognize his effort, then you do not know me.

How many coaches will coach our national team without a contract. He had no job and worked without a contract. Yet you guys wanted to him out when we did not qualify.

The second phase of our qualifiers showed Coach Keshi had a lot to offer. We beat Sudan, Congo and drew with the group leaders South Africa. That is seven points from nine. He did not just drag our football back as people like you make him out to be.

What ruined our world cup chance?

Onazi got injured and had no replacement. What was Reuben (unfit and without a club) doing at the world cup? What were agbim, Uchebo etc doing at the world cup? what value did they add to the team?

My point: Junk players (Apologies) are meant for experimentations to select the outstanding ones amongst them. No sensible coach takes a bunch of them to a competition.
Keshi never learns. He did the same thing at the confeds cup and got burnt. Same way Brazil got burnt when Neymar was injured. Coach filled the team with junks like fred and co.

Competitiveness?
He did not bring any competition to the team. Some people were constant starters despite pooor performance. keshi only rings changes when he has got himself in a tight corner.

I watched the game against Sudan live at the Abuja stadium. I was happy we won but not impressed. The team was mediocre.

We were lucky the ref gave us that long an extra time in the game against south africa. Otherwise, we lost.

Keshi had no business losing to Sudan in Sudan. The team was mediocre.

Watch Manu Garba's team play and understand 2 things.

1. Right players

2. Right tactics.

Yes Aaron samuel scored, where is he today? Where is Mba today? Did you watch the much praised Ghanaian third division player Kwesi Appiah crumble against CIV?

Its only a matter of time before some junk players (apologies) drop back the form. Some will not perform when the game is raised to another level above them. They drop. So you may experiment with them but 1 or 2 of the outstanding ones are enough to make the team for a competition. (Keshi fills his team up with them).

And when they drop form, you simply drop them ( Keshi would rather stick with Reuben, Agbim etc despite the odds)

Its not rocket science, things dont work that way. Its only a matter of time before the team begins to spiral down. Even the few professionals in the team fill the weight when you surround them with junks.

My point: Keshi is mediocre when it comes to 2 things.
1. players selection
2. Technicality.

you guys and this your manu garba talk, nff does not interefere with garba's selection or any other unger age teams as they do with the super eagles, if manu garba become super eagles coach, nff will be the one selecting players for him.

The only time nff allowed keshi to pick his players completely, we won the nations cup even though nff felt he will fail. The world cup squad and other competitions we participated in, nff interfered with players's selection. Forget all what you read in the media, that's the truth

It is easy to just rant and criticize and call someone mediocre.

Let me address few points. Manu Garba's team have been built since they were in U13. It has been a continuous long process and the team play together regularly. The crust of the team is still there but see the likes of Success, Nacho, Ezeh, Nwakali, Alampasu etc. They can not train with the team. Most of them have not been signed to professional clubs so the coach still has time to continue it.

The National team is different. It takes time to get them to click and then the administration problem between Maigari and Pinnick affected the team.

Since Nigeria did not qualify, how many top friendlies have we played to nurture the growing talents like Aaron Samuel? No top matches. Yet, all of you are ready to heap blame on Coach Keshi.

Technical ability. Looked at the Ivorian and Ghanaian teams. Looked at the Algerians. They have players playing in top clubs. How many do we have? Even Moses chose his club over the National team.

Yet, Coach Keshi could still bring players together in few months and win the AFCON. Then you will say he lacks no technical ability. We drew with Catalunya, Had narrow losses to the Uruguayans, Argentina (the World Cup Finalist), we drew with Italy. Without top talents. A Coach with Zero technical knowledge would be white washed.

With beat the Malian team 4-0. And knocked out the Ivorians.

Coach Keshi did what he could with the limited talents we have. Even Moses benched at Chelsea and Liverpool.

Which players do you have that the Coach should call? Even the Uche he called could not finish one on one chances against South Africa. He only scored a penalty why Aaron Samuel scored two goals in three games despite not starting.

We do not have the talents. Facts. It took long before we started building and following our building. You can not blame Coach Keshi for the mismanagement of our football by the NFF.

Coach Keshi invited Nacho for the CHAN and he absconded from Camp. Would you blame Coach Keshi for that?

We have the talents.

Reuben gabriel was fresh from injury and without a club. He was clearly out of form but Keshi chose to stick with despite despite having Nosa, Joel or Raheem lawal to choose from.

Guess what?

It came back to burn us. Reuben came in for injured Onazi against France and the midfeild collapsed.

Is that what you call a good coach?

A good coach arms his team with the appropraite armoury not with sentimental or fraudulent selections.

No good coach wouod comfortably stick with Agbim afer that over weight mediocre perfomance at the CHAN.

Either Keshi was fraudulent in sticking with these dead weights (apologies) or he was lazy and non competent.

He cost us the game against France with a fraudulent selection.

It is easy to say play Nosa, Play Joel Obi, Play Raheem Lawal.

Now ask yourself among these three names you mentioned, which of them is good defensively as Reuben Gabriel. If you watched the game closely, what affected Reuben was he was match rusty. After we conceded, he put in some nice tackles and blocks.

Your mention of Joel Obi highlights my point. Is it Joel Obi that would defend against Matuidi? A man who took out Onazi from the game and slowed Ambrose with a terrible knock.

I repeat, we do not have the talents. It takes time to discover good players. Just as Coach Keshi brought in Hope Akpan to replace Onazi who refused to shield the defence. Our game picked up against Sudan and Congo second phase of the qualifiers. Unfortunately, Hope Akpan injured our defence weakened due to injuries to Omeruo, Oboabona and Ambrose was still carrying a knock.

It is not as easy as you guys make it.
