Since the Year 661 AD (1,354 years ago) when Islam first broke up into two different groups (SUNNI Islam and SHIA Islam), many other Islamic branches and major sects have emerged. Today, there are over 1,726 different branches and major sects within Islam. This variety and diversity reflects the over 1,500 years of violent power struggles over leadership of the faithfuls as well as the effects of the spread of Islam via military conquests and peaceful adoption.

OK, HEAR IT AGAIN: There are over 1,726 Branches and major Sects within Islam. (sources: Gale Encyclopedia of Religion; Dirrah Islamic Research Trust; Pew Research Center, etc.). There are 4,600 religions worldwide. Islam is1 of the 7 universal religions. And no religion becomes UNIVERSAL unless it has spread by some forceful conquest, peacefully convinced, contained dissent and adapted to local situations in around the world. Islam is a universal religion. So, Islam is not a religion of one village in Pakistan or of one Imam in Nigeria.

Good Muslims, especially young Muslims MUST welcome new knowledge of the diversity and differences within Islam. Dynamic diversity is strength and not weakness. Embrace it. There are two groups of people that weaken the Islamic faith: First, the illiterate power-mongering hypocritical old men who protect their personal powers by using tools of science and modernity (e.g., satellite, planes, cellphones, Skype and the Internet, etc,) to preach that we must all go back and live according to the primitive laws of 2000 years ago. The same old men who nurture violence by insisting that any Muslim who refuses to be mentally backward is unworthy of life, peaceful coexistence, dignity and al-Jannah. The second group of people who weakens Islam are the educated Muslims who are too cowardly to raise their voices in protest against the imposition of outdated laws of absolute conformity on today's Muslims. That religious insistence on conformity makes it difficult for young Muslims to have the independence of thoughts necessary for interaction and success in today's multicultural world.

DO NOT FORGET: Islam has over 1,726 branches and major sects that uses diverse practices. There are 13 different versions of the Hadith in existence. So, no matter how many times they repeat it: IT IS NOT TRUE THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE INFLEXIBLE WAY ISLAM IS PRACTICED WORLDWIDE.

Islam is a strong religion. It has survived for almost 1500 years. Islam was also the flexible religion that championed Literature, Science, Music, Poetry, Art and multiculturalism. But today Islam is meeting fierce resistance worldwide due to the loss of flexibility. It is time to stop listening to the old men who protect their own powers by teaching and nurturing fake fears that Islam is so inflexible, so unadaptable and so fragile that any reasonable intro of modernity will break it.
