--continuation-- Deacon James a sixty year old retired civil servant was seated in the balcony of his duplex located in Lekki phase 2. All thanks to his children(Tina and Mayor) James, a father of two served in the Nigeria civil service for forty years, first as a worker in the Ogun state ministry of Agriculture where he met his beautiful wife, Alice. The marriage went on for many years before they were blessed with a pretty baby Christina and years later, they had the ever handsome looking Mayowa. As the name implies, Mayowa. The birth of Mayowa was said to have brought joy into the family, as Deacon James was made the clerk of the Ogun state house of Assembly. He would later go on to serve as the clerk of the Senate. A position he held for six years, until the brutal Sanni Abacha regime dissolved the legislators. Thanks to his diligence at work and ability to meet people and become friends with them immediately. James was recommended by the ousted head of interim government, Earnest Shonekan who was overthrown three months after, Ibrahim Babangida installed the interim government. Based on the recommendation, Deacon James would go on to serve as the Permanent secretary of the Ogun state ministry of Agriculture. Even though he was a few years into the job when Christina got pregnant, and since then, the father-daughter relationship has suffered a strain. Efforts by members of the family to bring them back to the same page have proved abortive. "Good morning dad." Christina greeted. Deacon James raised his head from the newspaper he was reading. "Good morning." He replied non challantly. "Is mummy inside?" She asked. "Yes." Chris came to a stop on the balcony all smiles. "Good morning Grandpa." He said. "Chrisboy. How is you today?" Deacon James asked amidst laughter. "Am fine sir. I can see you are fine too." Chris replied. "All thanks to my wife." The old man said. "Have you ever thought of what marriage looks like? Do you think it is fun or a kind of bondage?" At once, Tina knew her presence was no longer needed. As the two men would soon go deep into their 'boys talk.' "Chris, I'll be inside." With this, she walked into the living room without another look at her father. -------------- "Christie dear, you know, sometimes I think you are hiding the truth regarding Christopher's birth and his father." Mrs Alice James broke the silence. "Mummy, I told you the truth then and I have been tellling you the truth since then. If I had wanted to lie, I would have concealed the pregnancy and let you find out, but I didn't. I told you as soon as I reached an agreement with Daniel and I told you about it immediately." Tina paused. "You asked me to come home immediately so we could make a decision. I couldn't come because of exams then and by the time I did, dad knew about it already and Daniel was out of the country." Mrs Alice heaved a deep sigh. "so, what do you suggest that we do?" She asked. "Am sure you know that Chris deserve to know his father." "Of course, I will tell him, but I want him to be matured a bit. The way he handles the news is very important and whatever decision he makes is very important. As a mother, I can't let my son who I have invested heavily on go on to move in with a father who has never been there." Tina explained. "You keep talking about maturity. The boy in question is matured than his agemates. And, I don't know how you intend to keep him away for such a long time." "Mum, you can't understand." Tina said. "I know I can't understand, but I want you to know that, even if his father forcefully takes him away now. In decades to come, your child will still look for you. Even when his father is not known, the boy is clamouring to know him. That shows that blood is thick and the bond is everlasting. Quit hiding him from his father for your own good." Mrs Alice concluded. "Let's set the table please." "Not today mum. I am late for work already." Tina replied. "Its just breakfast. Or is it because of your father?" "No mum! I'll call you later." A shadow could be seen lurking outside the kitchen. But aside her parents, no one else lived in the house. Tina waved it off as nothing as she grabbed her handbag abd strolled out of the kitchen. -- to be continued-- 2 Likes |
