The Holy Trinity is the oldest of the six monasteries and is also a seeming gravity defying construction which overlooks the Greek town of Kalambaka. Built in 1476, this impressive building is sitting on a 400 m. high rock, the monastery used to be accessible via a net and rope ladder. The entrance of the monastery can be reached via a series of 140 steps which club about 400 meters high and are carved directly into the cliff face.

To experience what it is like to be a real hermit, you have to come to Vestmannaeyjar archipelago located off the south coast of Iceland. If you were to move to the island of Elliðaey, you’d be about as isolated as you could get. On the island there is one lonesome house meaning your only neighbours would be the few stray cattle that amble about the grassy rock that is Elliðaey. Sadly not a great deal is known about the island or the house that sits upon it however some sources claim it is now simply used as storage, though for what remains uncertain.

(5) This little rural house hidden in the Apuseni Mountains in Romania is more suitable for horror fans than romantic loners. Apart from the eerie fog, this area is a part of the Transylvania region, home to the legendary vampire Dracula.


(6) This property is a church dedicated to Maximus the Confessor built on the very top of the Katskhi pillar, a natural limestone monolith located in western Georgia. In the 7th century the Katskhi Pillar, a rock that rises some 40 meters high, became the site of a small Christian church. For the last 20 years the church has been inhabited by one Georgian monk who ensures the upkeep of the church while enjoying the splendid views of the forest below him. Interestingly, even in today’s world women are still not allowed to climb to the top of the Katskhi Pillar.


(7) Is there anything more romantic than spending a weekend with that special someone in this astonishing house perched on a rock in the middle of the river? This amazing isolated house is located on the Drina River in Serbia. The tiny wooden house has been standing on an exposed rock for more than 40 years, it was built by a group of young boys back in 1968 that used the rock to sunbathe.


( Known as the Solvay Hut, this hut is located on the north-eastern ridge of the Matterhorn Mountain, Switzerland. The Solvay Hut at 4003 m is the highest hut on the Matterhorn. It is a small emergency refuge for about 10 persons situated on a ledge immediately above the Moseley Slab on the Hörnligrat. It is strictly to be used in the event of an emergency. The hut was built in August 1915. The hut was erected within only five days. In 1966 the hut was rebuilt and in 1976 an emergency telephone was installed.
