Have you been ever called a "Woman Wrapper" before? How did you feel? What message does the phrase pass to you? What do they mean by woman wrapper and what should be the meaning of the phrase in the actual sense? Years back (even today), if you call any man a "woman wrapper", you have given him the worst insult of his life because to them, a "woman wrapper" is a man who the wife controls, a man who have no say at home or in the presence of the wife irrespective of where they find themselves. However, after considering and reconsidering the phrase "Woman Wrapper" I think it remains the best phrase to define a man who is an upright man and the best thing that happens to his wife. Yes, because the wrapper to an Isoko or Urhobo woman is the safest covering and the major identity of her dignity. Once she puts on the double wrapper, she is revalued by admirers as another man's wife and as such she is accorded that respect. The Isoko/Urhobo woman knows the value of the wrapper and so would cry if her box of wrappers was stolen. Wrapper is for the woman, a covering of prestige and honour, that is why any Isoko/Urhobo woman who does not own a wrapper is considered a woman without respect. So when next any man or woman calls you a woman wrapper, smile and tell him or her, "If you (as a man) is not a woman wrapper, you are a worthless man" or if you (a woman) has no woman wrapper at home, you are but an uncovered woman who has lost her dignity and honour". Yes, because you (the woman wrapper man) is the covering of dignity and honour to your wife. |
