There was a time when a flight to Lagos from PH was 28 Naira and a Peugeot 504 was 6000 Naira. Even then it was not "CHEAP" because bus fare was 5 Kobo and Coke was 10 Kobo and 18000 Naira a year was the highest salary in government.
In those days a flight to New York would have been around 500 Naira. We are talking Shagari's government/Buhari's government. It was not "CHEAP" at all

Cheap is absolutely NOT the word at all

17,480 naira at that time was almost equivalent to the same in dollars. so please it wasn't cheap, only the extremely rich rocked the seats of airplanes in that period.

Even at this price, Nigeria has already lost its bearing. We have read how Lagos Newyork return ticket was 600 Naira in 1982. So what's the news here?

Actually.,....the blame for Nigeria Airways' collapse goes back to the Shagari govt.

Then the economic downturn of the 1980's,...which made it difficult to maintain or replace planes....plus the fact that Nigerians love cheap things (people refusing to pay excess luggage charges for instance....).....and the fact that NA became a looter zone....and was not run properly....led to NA's collapse. By 2001....NA had just one plane.(Down from 30 in 1979).

By contrast Ethiopian Airlines which is older than Nigeria Airways is still around.... because they had a series of CEO's who knew when to cut costs...and when not to. And when them CEO retires...the replacement is a handpicked clone.

IMO....we should have privatized the thing in the 1990's...and given it to the kind of guy who turned BA and later Emirates Air around.
