Election debates are meant to play an important role and are provided in the run up to elections. But it would appear to be a stuff of nightmare for most political aspirants. Little wonder some fail to show up.

Election debates reflect and are good for Democracy as well as for voters, who are afforded a real opportunity to be presented with a “clear picture” of the choice they eventually make on any poll in question.

This makes the notion of hearing those who are competing for their votes being tested, a very important aspect of elections. But in a country like Nigeria, we are aware that debates do not turn the tides of elections, as they don’t seem to influence the opinions of the voters. This brings us to the question “Election Debate: what is the use?”

Do televised debates actually help us to evaluate policy options and the relative competencies of the candidates involved? To this end there have been divergent opinions on the question “Election Debate: what is the use?"

Ahead of the 2015 presidential debate for the general elections, a cross-section of the public has expressed their views as follows:

“The debate is relevant because it is an avenue for the candidates to bring to bear what they have in stall.”

“There is no need for debates since elections are not won in Nigeria based on debates.”

“No need for debate because the candidates do not go by what they say on the debate front, after they are elected.”

“The debate process is faulty; therefore, the debate is needless”

“It is more of interrogation than a debate”
