What the phrase is supposed to mean is different from what it has actually come to mean, due to, as you said, abuse from users. Saying a fairly used car (or electronic device) is clean or very clean, is supposed to mean that it is in very good condition, internally and externally, meaning the prospective buyer wouldn't need to spend money repairing or refurbishing the car (or electronic device). However, people throw the phrase around these days, as nobody would admit that the car he is selling Isn't 'clean', especially when the car is free of dents and scratches, probably cos it was recently sprayed. |
