Real Madrid destroyed Granada 9-1 in La Liga’s early kick off on Sunday, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting five for the first time in his career.

James Rodriguez, who had been missing since February 4 with a broken metatarsal, returned in place of the suspended Isco.

The omens looked good for Los Blancos, who had won all of their seven games with a midfield of James, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in 2014-15.

Elsewhere, Alvaro Arbeloa and Raphael Varane both entered the fray as Dani Carvajal and Pepe were deemed unfit beforehand.

Surprisingly, it was the visitors who began most brightly, but a mix of poor decision-making in advanced areas and unfortunate finishing - Robert Ibanez clipping the post from Iker Casillas’s misjudgement – meant they risked awaking the dragon.

And so they did. Midway through the first half, Gareth Bale continued his recent resurgence, leaving Diego Mainz on his back, before rounding Oier Aranzabal and coolly toepoking the ball into an empty net.

Just five minutes later, Ronaldo grabbed the first of his quick-fire treble with an accomplished finish after James played him in with a defence-splitting flick in the box.

The Portuguese then conjured up two more strikes, slamming home a rebound and sending a missile past Oier, although the former Barcelona goalkeeper should have got his hands to the ball.

However, Granada did end the half somewhat positively as Youssef El Arabi smashed the crossbar from 25 yards out with a piledriver, which dropped onto the line but didn’t bounce over.

The second half began with a bang as Granada tested Casillas with two snapshots on target, but Benzema quickly turned their optimism into the stuff of nightmares when he beautifully chested down a corner and volleyed it home.

Moments later, Ronaldo upped his tally to four for the afternoon thanks to some unselfish play from Bale, who delivered a tantalising ball across the face of goal for the No 7 to head into an empty net.

Madrid were well and truly in full flow and they would make it 7-0 before the hour mark, Benzema taking a touch before blasting a low shot past Oier, but Ibanez offered some brief respite 20 minutes later as he pulled one back for Granada.

Nonetheless, it was to be a grandstand finale for the hosts, who looked like the team who won 24 straight matches earlier in the season, starting with Diego Mainz’s own goal from Bale’s cross.

Ronaldo fluffed numerous chances throughout the second half, but he nonetheless proceeded to find his fifth, capitalising on non-existent marking to send in a header, as Madrid served up an Easter surprise.
