The technological singularity hypothesis states that accelerating progress in technologies will cause a runway effect wherein artificial intelligence will exceed human intellectual capacity and control, thus radically changing or even ending civilization in an event called the “singularity”.
Kurzweil predicts that singularity would occur around 2045 where as vinge predicts some time before 2030. At the 2012 singularity summit, stuart armstromg did a study of artificial general intelligence (AGI) predictions by experts and found a wide range of predict dates with a median value of 2040.
Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom fascinating new book super intelligence cogently argues that the prospects of super intelligent machines is “the most important and most daunting challenge humanity has ever faced” if we fail to meet this challenge he concludes ,malevolent or indifferent (AI) will likely destroy us all .
