Governments, banks, corporations, criminals, wealthy individuals and rogue political groups all have a need to protect valuable goods or information. When it comes to protecting what’s close to them, I thought the pentagon and the white house will make the list, I bet you will be disappointed just like me. These organisations spare no expense on building the most robust vaults. This list features extreme locations, bomb proof doors, guards with marksmanship training and metre thick steel reinforced concrete walls. To all the would be bank robbers amongst us, good luck.

1. The Fort Knox

Fort Knox aka The US Bullion Depository is one most
highly secured vaults in existence. The fort is home
to thousands of tons of gold and historic items such
as the US Declaration of Independence. Despite the
heavily guarded and fortified facility the real star is
the gold vault underneath the building. Guarded by a
22 ton blast proof door and a secret code that is
divided by ten people.

2 Federa Reserve Bank of New York.

The Federal Reserve Bank in New York holds around
25% of the world’s gold, the bank is so large it takes
over an entire city block. As you can imagine with so
much at stake security is extremely tight. The vault is
located eighty feet below street level and about fifty
feet below sea level. If you want a crack at it you’ll
first have to get past the patrolling armed officers
with marksmanship training.

3. Doomsday seed Vault

The Doomsday Seed Vault has been designed not to
store gold or money but instead holds a wide variety
of plant seeds. The idea is that in the event of a
natural or man made disaster humanity can preserve
crop diversity and always generate a source of food
no matter what happens. To try and increase the
chances of survival the compound is located in one
of the remotest places on the planet – a desolate rock
island in the Arctic Circle, with the vault is situated
inside an old copper mine. On top of the remote
location the seed safe is armed with with blast-proof
doors, motion sensors, airlocks, and one meter thick
steel reinforced concrete walls. If you ask me this is a brilliant idea.

4 .Pionen Vault

The Pionen Bunker is home to WikiLeaks, the famous
whistle-blower news agency founded by Julian
Assange. The bunker is housed in a former civil
defence center in White Mountain in Stockholm. The
bunker is only accessible by one tunnel and capable
of withstanding a hydrogen bomb.

5. Antwep

Antwerp, Belgium is home to one of the most
impressive diamond vaults in the world. The vault
was built in a collaboration between 1500 diamond
merchants and is fitted with state of the art
technology. Heat detectors, magnetic fields, a 3 ton
door and lock with 100 million possible combinations
are just some of the defence systems in place.
Despite these extreme security measures, thieves
somehow broke in and stole $100 million worth of
diamonds in 2003. They set off no alarms and the
break in was not discovered until the next morning
when officials arrived at the Diamond Center.

6. The bank of England Vault

The Bank Of England Gold Vault holds more than
4,600 tons of gold within bombproof walls. The vault
doors can only be accessed with voice recognition
and other complex security features. The vaults wall
were considered so secure that the banks staff
sheltered from bombs in this vault during World War
II.
