In the dawn of Xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South-Africa, some Nigerians have called for all South-African owned firms to leave Nigeria including MTN and DSTV.

MTN Nigeria has revealed that about 6,000 Nigerians will lose their jobs if MTN is made to leave Nigeria. Head of Communications MTN, Mr Wale Goodluck said this while reacting to calls by a protest group in Edo state yesterday that the telecommunications offices in Nigeria will be shut and their installations attacked if the xenophobic attacks in South Africa continues.

Mr Goodluck said there are only 12 expatriates working for the company in Nigeria compared to a workforce of 6,000 Nigerians.

“So if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99% of our workforce will be unemployed.

Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs. This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians. We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” he said.

That is highly unlikely. I advise he gets his trap shut before inciting the public against his company.

Oga Wale, a minus for MTN would be a plus for Glo, Airtel and Etisalat.

If Mtn leaves, people and businesses would port to glo and other networks. These other networks would receive a boost and would expand and also employ more Nigerians.

Enough is enough for those South Africans.

Far from being solipsistic, asides the estimated 6000 that would be rendered unemployed, so many beneficiaries of the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship award in our Nigerian universities can as well bid their "200,000 naira per year" used in defraying study expenses goodbye. Very sad indeed.

Introspecting, MTN hasn't done any wrong & sending them packing doesn't make us less xenophobic than the south african instigators are. Better ways should be contrived to resolve this, in my own unimpeachable opinion.

If you really understand what an Independent Sovereignty should be in terms of foreign policy and relationship, much importantly, protecting it's citizens all over the world. The vacuum of MTN would be filled so fast by that potential giant competitor for the private telecoms, which was prematurely killed by conspiracy. MTEL would come back to provide the best and affordable telecom services to us all. We would do more good to ourselves as a Nation to let our money stay in our country. What do you think about this?

Bros, You might work for MTN,be a propaganda tool or a direct beneficiary of their scholarship for all I care. MTN has never been useful to the broader Nigeria... If they wanna go,fine. They should be our guests for all we care. Nigeria can always Nationalize MTN or sell the vacuum to other very willing bidders we don't care. If Nigerians are being treated badly or killed in their own country, telling them to leave our country is a fair way to protest.

I wonder why some Nigerians are self-centred. Why should anyone(u inclusive) make job lose a blackmailing tool?

MTN is by far not even the cheapest network judging by data and voice services, so why re we supposed to be threatened by that loose claim. All these other good network providers will be capable of absorbing all those intelligent Nigerian staff in MTN sharply. Visa fone tariff still remains the cheapest for now with good data service. MTN will be forgotten in a hurry with no ripple effect to regret. If we can chase MTN, DSTV, SHOPRITE and co back to SA, den it ll just be fine. We dont need any SA company any more in this our peaceful God given country.............Aluta Continua...

So should we watch our fellow countrymen in SA die because we want to eat?

Is this supposed to be a threat from MTN to us or what?
