I asked a friend to help me ask at a GTB branch and apparently, its N50,000 to open a domiciliary account (or N10,000 for a current account). Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

Certainly; your friend deceived you. I opened both current and domiciliary acct. with GTB late last year. To open current acct. the minimum deposit is #5000. Some branches require having current acct. with them before opening dorm. acct. The same requirements for the two of them.( 2 reference form; NEPAL bill for proof of address; national passport or driver license; one passport). Provided you have current with GTB; you just fill dorm. opening acct. form and pay minimum deposit of $100 no more. Next time try to make effort on your own to do certain things for yourself when it comes to money. You should have visited any GTB bank before embarking on your friend. No one can like you more than yourself. Thank God is not more thank #50000. Be careful with such friend.

How can a bank discourage somebody from opening an account with the bank, Do you read what you wrote at all.

Hey guys,no need for tempers to flare,I think the friend may probably have talked to an intern in the bank,who obviously knows next-to-nothing about the requirements,but for stupid pride did not want to be seen as not knowing,therefore he/she gave a wrong figure,or the friend may have misrepresented the facts,however they require $200 to open a dollar denominated dom account @ GTB,and $2000 @ standard chartered

GBAM!!!  most banks and many other businesses for dat matter no sabi anything about customer service. if you no get connection (long leg) for bank,  na by luck you go experience great customer service. de exception na make you dress up with serious suit and tie, or impeccably clean kaftan with nice platinum chain - then, dem go begin greet you with yes sir, etc because dem go tink say you be multi millionaire.   if to say customer greet dat gateman with N2000, na so him for escort you go bank manager office sef for personalized service.  sad, but true.

Or am I wrong about this, people?  Am I the only person banks ever discouraged from opening an account with them?  I remember that when trying to get a domiciliary account, one of the young reps asked me to go back to the university I skipped to get my transcript.  Is that a form of encouragement too?  You are either completely ignorant of banking in Nigeria or you just hate me personally.

actually, this is from personal experience, i opened a current account and a dom account with gtbank completely free of charge, all i did was pay in 5k into the current a few days later just to get it activated.so i guess, it sometimes depends on the branch,

Two things - why are you asking a gateman about opening an account? What do transcripts have to do with opening bank accounts?

If you want information about account opening, it is not arbitrary and MUST be clearly stated. I don't think it's too much hassle to go into a bank to ask yourself or better yet check on their website if the information is available there.

You can even call the helpdesk number available on GTConnect if you require information but cannot access the internet.

I don't regard a gateman's comments as 'discouraging'. It's like saying you go to a place to buy a house and the gate man tells you the house costs 300,000 and you feel 'discouraged'.  

In essence, a gate man should be completely disregarded and is irrelevant to the conversation. The comment about the bank officials asking for transcripts on the other hand should be probed further. Simply saying they asked for transcripts doesn't give enough context to make a determination of what happened.
