Lets think about this...

Anytime i hear people say we are in the 21st century i kinda feel like how come?

From my little knowledge of numeric values and the meaning of a century,i believe that a century means 100years and the first two numbers that precede the numeric integration which comprise the 00 ought to be the determinant in the nomenclature of the whole numeric values.

So if we have years 1800 to 1899,will it not be absurd to call this the 19th century?

I believe the years between 1800 and 1900 should be tagged 18th century(100 years counting from the year 1800) and subsequently this should apply to 19th century and the 20th century which is the present range of years.

I have taught about this and i have made some research as to why there is a leap in the naming of these years, and i also tend to wonder when exactly did the counting start? Ok ok there was definitely a year 01 to 100 and of-course this should be the first century right? so what is this thing about a jump in naming these years?

For petes sake we are in the year 2015 but ever since the year 2000 i have been hearing that we are now in the 21st century and im honestly confused here and i don't know if im the only one with this mindset or probably there is something im not getting right...*Just thinking*

From the year 100-200 - 2nd century

Therefore from year 2000-2100 - 21st century.
