HELP



Puh-lease dear educationists and born-teachers,
advice, instructions and guidelines needed quite
urgently.
How does one begin to teach a 15-year-old boy
how to read and write in the space of four
months?

JAMES


James is not a small boy, not anymore. He now
farms as much as his father and taps palm-wine
even more than the old man. James had been riding
his father's bike since he was very young. He is
blessed with long arms that makes him look like a
professional biker on those noisy machines.
But James is still a student. He passed his Junior
WAEC last year but was advised to repeat JSS 3
class because he was obviously not mentally fit
for the senior class. Obviously, he had got help in
the exam hall for the duration of the WAEC( or is
it WASSCE?). But James is a willing learner, and
that's why my attention is stolen. A plain, simple
young man who has the some of the purest of
dreams and hidden potentials among my students.
He's just by no means getting it right YET most
probably because some Primary school(s) failed to
do their job very well on his reading and spelling
but kept promoting him and 'pushing him away'. As
long as his father pays the school fees, what does
it matter to them if a village boy can recognize
the word 'boy' or not.

'Uncle, I don't know how to read. I want to learn,
can you please help me?'

James


' Uncle, I can't spell.'
And when his classmates go ''Uncle, spell 'a-n-t-
o-n-y-m' , he asks 'Uncle, but how do you know
to spell it? I want to know too'
These statements and request touch me when he
makes them, even to my colleagues.
Few days ago, he walks up to a colleague and
makes another call for help.
'Uncle, I will like to be a soldier. But I will also
like to go to a university so I can be a corper like
you and then be a Professor and then a politician.
Please advise me.'


I am not sure on the details of the advice my
friend rendered but I sure as yesterday want to
advise him rightly, guide him to the best of my
ability and beyond. But it starts with my initial
question.

Use Television.

Start with the alphabets-small letters b4 d big ones. Then move to 2letter words 3letter words etc. books like queen premiere, brighter grammar nd mastering English will help a lot. Goodluck.

Encourage him 2 read as much novel as he can,this will go a long way in improving his diction.
