Varsity teachersprotest Ekiti kidnappingMembers of the Academic Staff Unionof Universities (ASUU) on Mondaymarched round the streets of AdoEkiti, Ekiti State, to protest the kidnapof its members by unknown gunmenin the state.The protest which started at the gateof the Ekiti State University TeachingHospital (EKSUTH) took them to theEwi’s Palace and terminated at theGovernor’s Office.The placard-carrying protesters madeup of ASUU members from Ekiti StateUniversity (EKSU) and ObafemiAwolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife,moved round the town, drawing theattention of the public to seizure ofits members.Some of their placards read “ASUUDemands Unconditional Release ofOur Members,” “Governor Fayose, WeAre Not Safe Please,” “Kidnapping isa Crime Against Humanity,” “EnsureSafety of Lives and Property in EkitiState,” “Enough of Kidnapping in EkitiState,” and “Governor Fayose, PleaseSave our Souls,” among others.The protest was led by EKSU ASUUChairman, Prof. Olufayo Olu-Olu, OAUASUU Chairman, Dr. Caleb Aborisadeand Federal University of Technology,Akure (FUTA) ASUU Chairman, Dr.Bola Oniya.An ASUU member at EKSU, Dr.Folashade Alade, was one of thethree women kidnapped last Fridayalong Ifisin-Igbole Road while ontheir way to a wedding ceremony.The EKSU Branch of ASUU has giventhe state government till May 22 tosecure the release of their membersin kidnappers’ den or face anindefinite strike action.The university teachers said theincessant abduction of theirmembers is no longer acceptablewith the kidnappers demandingransom of N70 million for each of thethree victims still in their captivity.ASUU members still in captivity areDr. Alade, Dr. Kikelomo Adegun bothof EKSU and Dr. Femi Omisore ofOAU.Offering explanation on the protest,Prof. Olu-Olu condemned thekidnappers’ clampdown on universitylecturers and medical workers,saying the situation should not beallowed to continue.He expressed the fear that the statewas gradually sliding into anarchy,adding that varsity teachers who arebeing owed three months salaries bystate government cannot raise N210million to pay ransom on three donsin captivity...Pls bring back our lecturers #
