Diesel technology is constantly being improved, Though there are few pros and cons of diesel engine. One of which is.

PRO Diesels get great mileage. They typically deliver 25 to 30 percent better fuel economy than similarly performing gasoline engines. Diesels also can deliver as much or more fuel economy than traditional gasoline-electric hybrids, depending on the models involved and whatever rapidly developing automotive technology achieves.

CON Although diesel fuel used to be cheaper than gasoline, it now often costs the same amount or more. Diesel fuel is also used for commercial trucks, home and industrial generators, and heating oil, so as demand for diesel passenger vehicles grows, the price of diesel fuel is likely to continue to rise because of competition from those other users.

Any comment, contribution or idea is highly welcome

PRO: Diesel fuel is one of the most efficient and energy dense fuels available today. Because it contains more usable energy than gasoline, it delivers better fuel economy.

CON: Although diesel fuel is considered more efficient because it converts heat into energy rather than sending the heat out the tailpipe as gas-powered vehicles do, it doesn’t result in flashy high-speed performance. In some ways, a gasoline-powered engine is like a racehorse — high-strung, fiery, and fast — whereas a diesel engine is more like a workhorse — slower, stronger, and more enduring.

PRO: Diesels have no spark plugs or distributors. Therefore, they never need ignition tune-ups.

CON: Diesels still need regular maintenance to keep them running. You have to change the oil and the air, oil, and fuel filters. Cleaner diesel fuels no longer require you to bleed excess water out of the system, but many vehicles still have water separators that need to be emptied manually.

Absolutely right, Diesel engine should be considered in Nigeria especially with the constant fuel scarcity, and even reliable for long distance journey. nice thread

2 main problems you run into Nigeria regarding diesel and cars are:

1. Most mechanics are not very familiar with them. Hence they discourage potential buyers that they are not good. As a dealer, you are in business to sell vehicle and make money as quickly /often as you can with your investment. It makes no sense to buy a vehicle that you will probably end up begging the customer before you can sell it. You will almost guarantee to take a loss on it after sitting on your lot for so long. Hence, your chance of turning a profit is slim to none.

I have seen cases where people will buy a tokunbo vehicle with diesel engine only to remove the engine and replace with petrol cos roadside quack mechanic told them that diesel engines are not as good and reliable as petrol.

2. Some Petrol stations, in a bid to make more money will dilute diesel with petrol. The proper slang in the business is "rice and beans". Assume the cost of loading a 33,000 litres of diesel tanker from the depot is N140/litre. Dealer sells at the pump for about N155/litre. A 12,000 litres of petrol might cost N85/litre from the depot and sells for about N97/ litre at the pump.

Rather than do that, they mix both together and sell as diesel for N155/litres, making almost additional N70/litre on the petrol. Some can mix 33,000 litres of diesel and petrol together to make 66,000 of fake diesel. That is more than N2m worth of illicit profit.

Fake diesel will end up cutting down the life expectancy for your vehicle. It begins by damaging your injectors first. Being a diesel engine, they are very rugged. Problem will not be obvious immediately. How do you know where you buy fake diesel 3 months ago when your injector pump is down?

Forget about the possibility of "shorting" the volume you get at the pump. If you buy 50 litres in your vehicle, you might end up with only 42 litres. There is a reason petrol stations are all over Nigeria.

Nigeria can take a reason/sense out of a decision with the way business is conducted there.

Ghana on the other hand has almost 60% diesel cars in the mix. Diesel engines are well embraced more that petrol and they have good mechanics there.

I hope you understand.

Thanks for your brilliant contribution, your information is a very vital point.. Thanks again

PRO: Diesel engines are built more ruggedly to withstand the rigors of higher compression. Consequently, they usually go much longer than gas-powered vehicles before they require major repairs. Mercedes-Benz holds the longevity record with several vehicles clocking more than 900,000 miles on their original engines! You may not want to hang onto the same vehicle for 900,000 miles, but longevity and dependability like that can sure help with trade-in and resale values.

CON: If you neglect the maintenance and the fuel injection system breaks down, you may have to pay a diesel mechanic more money to get things unsnaggled than you would to repair a gasoline system because diesel engines are more technologically advanced.
Re: Why Not Use Diesel Engine (passenger Cars) by edward1984(m): 10:57am On Jun 01, 2015
PRO: Because of the way it burns fuel, a diesel engine provides far more torque to the driveshaft than does a gasoline engine. As a result, most modern diesel passenger cars are much faster from a standing start than their gas-powered counterparts. What’s more, diesel-powered trucks, SUVs, and cars also can out-tow gas-powered vehicles while still delivering that improved fuel economy.

PRO Diesels last longer. Diesel engine parts are generally stronger than gas engine components, and diesel fuel has superior lubricating properties. As a result, diesel engines tend to last twice as long as gas-powered ones.
Re: Why Not Use Diesel Engine (passenger Cars) by edward1984(m): 2:05pm On Jun 03, 2015
PRO : Diesel fuel is safer. Diesel fuel doesn’t release fumes like gasoline does. It’s more difficult to burn and won’t explode like its lighter counterpart.
Re: Why Not Use Diesel Engine (passenger Cars) by edward1984(m): 9:31am On Jun 04, 2015
PRO : Diesels produce minimal carbon monoxide. This makes diesel generators useful in mines and submarines, environments in which gasoline engine exhaust would prove deadly.
Re: Why Not Use Diesel Engine (passenger Cars) by edward1984(m): 11:36am On Jun 05, 2015
PRO Diesel engines can easily accept synthetic fuels. Non-petroleum-based biofuels will run easily in diesel engines, whereas gas engines need to be significantly modified to accept such alternative fuels.
Re: Why Not Use Diesel Engine (passenger Cars) by edward1984(m): 3:26pm On Jun 05, 2015
PRO : Modern diesel engines have overcome disadvantages of earlier models of higher noise and maintenance costs. They are now quiet and require less maintenance as compared with gas engines of similar size.

Diesel cars use glow plugs in place of spark plugs
