Everyone sews right? Even if is just to fasten a button to a shirt.
OmaMontana will be introducing to us a lot of things in the sewing/ fashion world but today let's learn more about some sewing tools which you can use independently. Some of us are not familiar with some of these tools here.
So let's get started with the unfamiliar ones.
- Flexible Curve: This tool helps you create your own shapes and designs in pattern drafting. It has a rule built-in and it will hold its shape until it's changed. It is used to shape areas such as armhole, necklines etc.
- Set Square : It is used primarily as a guide for drawing horizontal lines and squaring up/down vertical or diagonal lines correctly.
- Thimble: The Thimble is made into plastic or metal. And is used to protect the finger from being pricked by the needle when sewing. A fitted Thimble will help you sew more conveniently especially when you are not used to it.
- Pin Cushion : A cotton stuffed cloth cut and sewn in many different shapes, commonly into the pumpkin, to keep the pins in place. It serves same purpose as the magnet.
- Tracing Wheel: Serrated or smooth wheel, it is used with the tracking paper to transfer marks (seam lines and shapes) into fabrics. It serve same purpose as the tailor's chalk, pencil or marker.
- Embroidery Scissors: This scissors has pointed blades and it is usually 4-5 inches in length. It is good for cutting buttonholes, threads and other small jobs.
- Yard Stick: Used for measuring fabrics especially in yards and meters and also for checking grain lines.
- Sewing Gauge: This is a measuring device, usually 6 inches with a movable indicator, convenient for measuring short lengths.
- Hem Gauge: A measuring device marked with various depths and hemline folds. It is practical when hemming straight on a grain line.
- Tape rule: Majorly for taking body measurements.
- Seam Ripper: A handy little tool for taking out seams and removing stitches. Though some individuals use blades for same function, it is risky as the blade may damage the fabric.
PS: There are some terms which most of us are not familiar with, we
would take our time to enlighten us on them next time.
