Inspired from the poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou (1928 - 2014)

She lays gloom all day
in her rusty cage,

her long years are filled
with anguish and pain.

with huge teary eyes
she envies the sky,

and longs to return
to her graceful place.

The caged bird sings
with a sorrowful voice,

hard years of grieve
reflects in her noise,

and she cries for aid
to an unknown friend,

for she longs to see
her bondage End.

Some days she dreams
of beautiful sunsets,

in that subtle pace
she quickly forgets,

her innumerable tales
of distress and fright.

But then she awakes
to the scorn of the night.

The caged bird sings
with a sorrowful voice,

hard years of grieve
reflects in her noise,

and she cries for aid
to an unknown friend,

and longs to see
her bondage End.

Her talons worn-out
from relentless use,

as she scritches for freedom
a struggle of little use.

The old metal bars
boldly mocks her aim,

but with resolved calm
she fiercely strikes again.

The old rusty cage
gives in on its weight.

Her relentless strives
has earned her a price.

With magnificent thrust,
she takes off the ground

To re-claim the skies
that she onces called HOME.

The caged bird calls
with a hopeful voice

Hard years of grieve,
reflects in her noise

and she cries for joy
to an unknown friend

for she has now seen
her bondage's End.

Fun facts: When you hear the words "I know why the caged bird sings," there's no doubt you think first of our author, Maya Angelou. But guess what? It ain't original! The words were actually first written by one of the first nationally acclaimed African American poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar, in his poem, "Sympathy."

Really?
I once read Laurence's poem on a facebook page and I didn't understand it. Though I remember seeing the statement about the caged birds but it just didn't make meaning to me.
But when I read late Maya's own piece... I feel in love with the piece.

Your poem is also a good reminiscent. I love it like my left hand grin

Birthday (haiku)

Candle flames on cake,
blown away by a whisper,
The celebrant's wish.

HBD to me!
