You go to Paris and speak English to them on the streets, even a fluent English speaker would look at you in disdain.

I agree with you. But in the world we now live in, man has to strive and if other languages will help you, so be it.

We we caned for speaking vernacular in the classroom from primary school. So should first go the generation that designed the curriculum.

We have had 60 years to adopt local languages officially but we didn't. By now kids will be rigorously taught one local language same way as English. Indian, Arab countries and several others did it.

So we cannot crucify the masses who have been left to eke out a living anyhow they can. Because the chose to learn languages they will find useful internationally.

Actually the more languages you speak, the broader your mind. It is not that the French that refused to speak English with you cannot speak English better than you.

It reminds me of President Francois Mitterrand of France and George Papandreou of Greece. As you may know they taught in American universities at one point. So sometimes they look at their English interpreters like - that's not what I said.

There is even Le Mond, an English newspaper in France. But you made my point about vernacular in schools. After all that, you come here with impunity to speak French and ignore someone asking for interpretation.

Yet, when we speak Nigerian languages, some people say it is impolite not to translate.
