Did you know that breast cancer – which is widely thought to affect only the women folk – also affects men too?

Breast cancer occurs in the breast tissue. The normal breast tissue in a man’s “breast” is not fully developed and resembles those found in the breasts of a girl before puberty. However, this tiny breast tissue makes some men susceptible to breast cancer.

Although breast cancer occurs in one of every 100,000 men each year, perhaps the most difficult challenge is the lack of awareness that this ailment affects men too.

How it develops

Breast cancer in men usually develops in the tiny breast tissue behind the nipples. The common symptom is a hard painless lump. Now, this symptom doesn’t necessarily mean a man has cancer. A non-cancerous condition called ‘gynaecomastia’ causes the male breast tissue to become enlarged too. But, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so if you notice hard or swollen nipple, report it to a doctor so that tests will be carried out.

Risk, and causes of breast cancer

It is usually rare for men below 35years of age to get breast cancer. Most men diagnosed are usually between the ages of 60 and 70.

But the risk factors that makes a man prone to breast cancer are:

High oestrogen levels
Every man produces some amount of oestrogen. However, high levels of oestrogen has been linked to breast cancer. Men who are really overweight are at high risk because oestrogen is partly made in the fat tissues of the body.

High alcohol intake
High alcohol intake leads to chronic liver conditions such as cirrhosis. This makes one also susceptible to breast cancer.

Family History or inherited faulty genes
As with women, males who have female relatives, (mothers or sisters) with breast cancer are also at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Inherited faulty genes are also a major cause of breast cancer in men, because 15–20 out of every 100 diagnosed men are related to inherited faulty genes.

Exposure to radiation
High exposure to radiation repeatedly over a long time is also one of the causes of breast cancer in men. It is especially true if the exposure started at a young age

Klinefelter’s syndrome
This is a rare genetic condition where a man is born with an extra female chromosome, i.e., he is XXY instead of XY. Men with this condition are about 20 times more prone to breast cancer than men with the XY chromosome.

Symptoms of breast cancer in men:

The most common symptom is a hard painless lump in the nipple, but others include

Swelling of the breast
Soreness in the skin of the breast
Discharge from the nipple, including blood.
Nipple retraction. Here the nipple is pulled back into the breast.
Lumps under the arm.
If you or a family member experiences these symptoms, it is best not to assume, but visit your physician immediately.

Treatment for breast cancer in men:

The same method used for treating breast cancer in women is the same for men. Although the treatment is also dependent on the stage of cancer progress, and how far it has spread.

The common methods are.

Surgery
Radiotherapy
Chemotherapy
Hormone therapy
Biological therapy.
Early detection is the key to combating and saving lives from breast cancer. Always report cases of strange lumps around the breast and underneath the armpits.
