Though it could be regarded as an issue for debate, I could convincingly say that development has helped in fostering disunity in the environment. Back in those days when not many people were privileged to have Gen sets, colour TV, VCR, Satellites, Phones, PCs and other gadgets. People who were privileged with TV sets & Generator sets, had their sitting room full with neighbours and friends each time there was a football match, national broadcast, or popular events aired.
The kid who had the only football in the street had the most friends and no kid around him wanted to mess up to avoid being left out from the game. Even those who gathered to watch movies at their neighbour’s window did so with relative peace and joy. The family with the only car in the vicinity knew they needed to convey not just their kids, but their neighbour’s kids to school or church and back, The house with the running water tap or borehole was usually a centre for attraction and gossip among folks and the owners of such didn’t have too strong “Don’t Fetch Restrictions” on them. Parents knew where to look for their kids; yabbing (as it was popularly called) was enjoyed by most especially those not directly involved.
These days every kid has a football, video game or kids Ipad with no one to play with. Most people watch events, matches and movies alone in their houses and no one to analyze them with. Fora to catch up, discuss ideas and come up with one voice, like we had then, has been reduced to the barest minimum.
Selfishness, envy, greed and unnecessary competition has taken over, we work so hard to acquire things we don’t really need just in order to outdo or own more than the next man. Relationships, families and ties have been broken as a result.
What happened to the spirit of oneness & being content with sharing with your neighbor?, Your kid can no longer play with the kid next door for reasons best known to Civilization & today’s wicked world. Our kids cannot enjoy that which we did in our days because we have taught them more on the dangers of sharing rather than the joys in it.
I admit those days had its downs, and I enjoy my gadgets with 4G network today but the relative peace, unity and faith we had back then was awesome. Some of the good friends I have today I may not have been privileged to have met.
This is clearly, “a Topic for Debate”, as opinion differs and I wouldn’t mind learning from yours.
