With deep sense of humility and great feelings of oppression, we write to stand against the unprecedented exploitations of students and imposition of inhumane/anti-students policies which have for long predominated the Kwara State University authority.

This is Nigeria, where our growing democracy is at its growth stage and this, to a very large extent must be respected at all level such that no one is oppressed nor denied his/her legitimate right.

Sometime last year, August 2014 to be precise, at the inception of the 2014/2015 academic session, the University authority was alleged to have unduly increase the tuition fees paid at the university indirectly by introducing some fees which are insignificant but unfortunately, the unjustifiable increase attracted a high level of criticism which forced the state government to instruct immediate reversal of the increment which are already being paid by students as at then.

Although, source had it that the funds were returned to students on request.

Equally, the Kwara State University authority imposed the rental of hostels on campus owned by the school on 100level and 400level students which is traditional to higher institutions in Nigeria.

Understanding fully that the accommodation facility owned by the University is insufficient for the whole of 100level students not to talk of the final students.

However, the desire to make outrageous profit from students accommodations forced the University authority to acquire private hostels off campus at a relatively low price and sub-let it out to students at a comparatively higher prices relative to other private hostels.

The tragedy in this case is that while students can easily access full self contain between the rate of #40.000 to #70,000 per annum in the University hosting community, of which he/she can decide to leave alone or have a roommate, such that they pay 50% each (i.e #20,000 to#35,000 each), the hostels acquired by the University are rented out to students for#90,000 (2 persons per room compulsorily i.e#45,000 per student).

This comparatively expensive price is coupled with the fact that the acquired hostels by the Kwara State University authority are distanced from school campus, such that students leaving on those hostels expend higher cost on transporting themselves to school daily; on a good day, at considerable normal student settlement, transportation to school campus cost between #30 to #50, but from those acquired hostels by the University, it cost between #70 to #100.

This is a major constrain that makes students abstain from renting those hostels and the University saw this as an opportunity to exploit its students unduly which is democratically unacceptable.

Given that all fingers are not equal, vast majority of the final year students decided to retain their former hostels in most cases or opt for a hostel lower in price and at considerable locations.

Surprisingly, after the third convocation of the University held on June 6th, 2015, which ushered out new graduates of the Kwara State University, the University authority denied graduates who refused to patronize her exploitative acquired hostels signing out of the University and threatened not to process their certificates if they do not pay a penalty fees of#45,000 (forty five thousand naira each) for not patronizing their inconsiderate market.

We see and will continue to see this as oppression, total injustice to the persons of the students, graduates and parents.

While we consider such payment as dubious and probably a means for the University to off-set its indebtedness to its staffs, as we are aware that the Kwara State government have been unable to pay the Kwara State University staffs for over 2 months, we would equally love to unequivocally say that we will go any length to ensure that this current exploitation strategy bythe University authority is fought using all legitimate means to a stand still.

While we will also lay emphasis on the fact that members of the University management team are “not” certificate bearer of KWASU, we would like to urge the Kwara state government to see into this, such that KWASU is not turn to a profit making business venture just like many of our higher institutions have been made to be today.

If our government cannot manage a University, it is better out-rightly privatized rather than turning our higher institutions to exploitation grounds.

To this end, We urge all well meaning Kwarans and Nigerians at large to come to the aid of these poor students from the unnecessary torture of the Kwara State University authority to allow graduates of the University signing-out without any further delay, as we never found in the Act that establishes KWASU, it’s power to involve in real estate business and even if it carry such object on, it must not be mandatory (except hostels on campus) as such infringes on personal rights of the students.

Your allegations are infact acceptable. I was given admission last year but when I review their school fee and other irrelevant levies, I was forced to turned around. Its unfair especially on the part of the hostel stuff. The hostels are really far away from the school premises. Hostel should be by choice. I hope the state government will look into the matter sha

This level of exploitation is way too much. But even without a student union government, the final years in the school could organize a peaceful march to state government secretariat expressing their grievances as this could be a rather surreptious scheme by school authorities without the state government backing.

I am also a victim of this, i have been wondering when we would speak out against the injustice melted out on us. Now is the time to join hands together until the appropriate authorities hear our plight.
