Following the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, fixing July 30, 2015 as the deadline for enrolment in the ongoing Bank Verification exercise it has in collaboration with all Nigerian banks introduced the Bank Verification Number, BVN, as a unique identification number for all bank customers.

The BVN according to the CBN is part of the overall strategy of ensuring effectiveness of Know Your Customer, KYC, principles which gives each customer a unique identity across the Nigerian banking industry.

As the deadline approaches, many bank customers are aloof regarding CBN’s modalities for enrolling other customers abroad.

This fear has been expressed by a customer in Markurdi, who stated that the CBN has not made adequate plans for the sick, old and those aboard.

“If only they will use the data gathered to forestall bank fraud, it will not be a futile effort, but how will they capture the aged, those on sick bed and those in the Diaspora?’’

Rose Otu, a Guaranty Trust Bank, GTB, customer also added that she thought the last minute registration would not be as time consuming because most people would have captured.
