Help! My Neighbour's Mom Has Tuberculosis And It's Spreading by charliebiz(m): 8:37pm On Jun 30, 2015
Please, what do I do? My neighbour's mother has tuberculosis and it is gradually being contracted by the other members of his family. He is married with two little kids, his wife recently gave birth for the second time through caesarean operation hence the mother's visit from the village and she brought along with her another kid who is not up to 2 years old; same age with his first kid. Altogether 6 people living in one room apartment; 3 kids, his Wife, his Mother and him. The Mother came with the symptom but was diagnosed of TB about three months ago when the coughing became unbearable and upon my family's insistence that they go for check-up coupled with her spittle drawing flies along the open passage way.

The fear for me is that two members of my family were once infected four years ago (two years apart) and to the glory of God, they were treated for close to 9 months before they were cured. Judging from our experience, My brother and I advised him on what to do and where to get FREE medical care which I don't know why he never took. Rather than going to the General Hospital at Surulere; which I heard has the best Specialist Doctors in Lagos, he took his family to the Military Hospital at Yaba (close to Yabatech) which according to him where ready to give him the much needed attention. After coughing out close to N40k for the test and treatment (he is a self-employed technician and business not doing too well), the Mother was diagnose of TB but the other family members were free. According to him, the Doctor promised to give him drugs that will prevent them from contracting it and a cure for the Mother. Everybody was kind of happy that relieve had come because hearing the old woman coughing at night and not being able to sleep wasn't funny.

A month later, when it seemed the cough was reducing, it became worst. After enquiry about the supposed drugs for her treatment, I heard they refused giving them the drugs because the TB has reached advance stage and can't be treated that he should send her back to the village (allegedly though) which according to the Mother, the coughing is not a new sickness in the village sad. Now it is close to two months after they couldn't get the drugs and she is coughing like badly that at night when everybody is asleep, she stays outside all through coughing and spitting. cry

Just last week, the little boy she came with from the village has contracted it and this week, the rate at which he coughs has increased and there are signs that his first daughter is also infected that we had to bar her from innocently coming to our house to play because she is fond of our last born that takes her out to buy her biscuits.

The only option I know has been given to him; which is going to the general hospital at Randle Surulere and even get the drugs for free, but for Pete's sake I don't know why he never did that. Is there any other option to save his young family which I don't think he is doing anything about because of frustration? undecided

This is serious.

Is it a lack of education that's worrying the man.
There is hope for the newly infected cases but I guess a compound meeting should be called to adress the issues lest it spread further and compel them to go for treatment.
Another problem is maybe the dosage of drugs was not followe religiously and so....
Thirdly maybe the village people dey pursue them

On a lighter note
Remind me not to shake you if I ever meet you. grin

He should go to LUTH in Idiaraba and ask for the DOTS Centre there, there are specialists there that treat TB and they give the drugs for free.

That we have started doing, i.e. avoiding his family but it hurts me cos I love little kids and they come around to play cos ours is self-contain. For the compound meeting, we are just four in the compound. Compound meeting is not feasible because one of our neighbour is an old woman that goes out in the early morning and comes back late and doesn't give a damn about what happens in the compound except to grumble when asked to contribute her own quota to any contribution, the other neighbour is a newly wed that just moved in and is having issues with this Man already that they don't say "Good Morning" and then us. We've started cleaning the compound with disinfectant though.

If I report him to the Ministry of Health, what will be the repercussion to him bearing in mind that he is struggling with business and family?

Ngwa, report him fast oh. The new baby isn't safe and you who is more aware should save the rest of the tenants especially as you have children.
I don't think it was bad him going to IDH but they would have referred him to the PHC closest to his area. You do know TB is airborne right and those whose immune system are low are vulnerable. Wash the compound with izal and take no chances.
