Some Of The Beliefs Of An Average Nigerian: by azeezakande: 10:09pm On Jul 06, 2015
Most Africans accept life is better in the United States, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in world. Nigerians make up significant part of African immigrants in the United State.

Majority of Nigerians in Nigeria if had the opportunity to live on the U.S. soil they would do so.

Every country on the face of the earth strive to be America because of it’s most wonderful civilization.

In my own genuine opinion; as far as I know here are some of the beliefs of an average Nigerian that is holding the country back:

I belief that every Nigerian (home & abroad) wanted to do solemnly swear that they will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the federal republic of Nigeria. It is like a rat race, from unborn kids to entertainers, everyone wants a bite of the national cake. More and more people believes, first come the presidency, then the multi-million dollar compounds in U.K., U.S., Dubai; oh, and the fame. Someone who was not born rich, and never imagined (lie) that a child from Otuoke, a small village in the Niger Delta, will one day rise to the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As a Nigeria President, one can come from having no shoes, no school bags, one meal a day, lanterns for study to joining one of the most elite economic class on earth just by serving the ‘oval office’ for a mere four years; heck even a day president can afford to buy about three thousand Rolls-Royce cars. That’s our believe.

On average, Nigerians believe that social development will miraculously happen.
Citizenry spend hours, days, and money, praying their way to development. These people forget that human problems, need human solutions.(not God). “Social development is about putting people at the center of development. This means a commitment that development processes need to benefit people, particularly but not only the poor, but also a recognition that people, and the way they interact in groups and society, and the norms that facilitates such interaction, shape development processes.”

Ultra reliance on the government.
One cannot discuss this statement without referencing John F. Kennedy’s inaugural famous words, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Fellow citizen of Nigeria rely heavily on the government. If the price of gari goes up, its the governments fault. Nigerians lack self creation, It’s just so much easier to blame someone or something else other than themselves.

Culture should never change.
First of all, culture is made by human, it has to change. As Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria in the 21st century is still big on culture (except Lagos); traditional culture, Religious beliefs, family values, and respect for elders. Our elders / leaders / godfathers / rich people are protected groups, they could unleash terror at any time. Nobody can talk to them anyhow without repercussion. It’s their way or the highway; forcing the citizens to take a back seat as onlookers.

Foreigners are god
A lot of Nigerians are guilty of this, as soon as someone holds a “ETATS SCHENGEN” passport of one month stay, we have started worshiping them. Nigerians belief that as soon as anyone board a plane to any oversea countries he or she has become rich, big man, better than them, the person should buy them a car, or send invitation letter.
