The streets was filled with the stench of bad water and decay. The roads and drainages were filled with water that were up to knee lenght when some one stepped into them. Dead rats, chickens, goats, and other kinds of animals floated on the surface. Properties such as television sets, clothes, bags, etc were also floating . Roofs of houses were blown away, fences collapsed. Cars were upside down. A rain storm had just hit Townsville. People trickled out of their houses as some held their heads in their hands, some held their index finger to their mouth as they looked at the ruin while others just looked on too bewildered and shocked to say or do anything.


Majority of the populace were farmers. They were the ones that grieved the most as the storm had utterly ruined their farms, and also destroyed their barns. Among the farmers, was Mary Nightingale aged 17. She was the youngest farmer in the town. As she arrived her farm, she bit her lower lip in distaste. There was not much on her farm as the fields were already waterlogged and bits of crops that she planted drifted on the water. The farm was what her parents left for her and her elder sister when they died. Her elder sister who was not cut out for farm work moved to the city and Mary, who on the other hand was experienced as she used to help her parents on the farm when they were still alive, stayed back and continued to manage it. With determination and perseverance, she was successful in her endaevour. But now, all her efforts were ruined. When she called her sister and told her what had happened, she was told to come and live with her.

The next day, she hitched a ride with Farmer brown and his wife, man who lived next door to her and was a good neighbor. He too was also moving in with his son in the city to recover from his loss. The journey took eight long hours but farmer brown and his wife kept her entertained as he shared jokes and discussed on various issues with her. This made the journey quite interesting. On getting to the city, alighted the truck and bade them goodbye waving her hands as the truck disappeared downhill. Looking at the directions that her sister gave her, she found the house but not without difficulty as she was a stranger to the city.
''Mary! welcome. How was your trip? hope it wasn't too tiring?'' Betty, her elder sister said as she wrapped her arms around Mary and welcomed her while she helped with some of her bags. The house was looked modest but beautiful. The walls were painted in yellow and the ceiling was made from P.O.P. the chairs were arranged in an L-shaped manner and pictures of her sister's husband and her sister hung on the wall.

''That's Jerry'' she quickly said when she saw Mary looking curiously at the picture with a man in it.
''He went on a trip. He'll be back tomorrow'' she also added.
Jerry's face looked like that of a bull frog as it was flat like it had being given a punch. His hair was bright red with a little bit of grey at the edges. His eyes were also big as it looked as if they would fall from the eye sockets if they were not turned carefully.
Mary didn't utter a word as she just smiled and sat on a chair. They then talked at length for some minutes and had lunch. Then they talked some more until it was dark. Mary was then showed to her room and after her sister bade her goodnight, she closed her eyes and slept like a log all through the night.

When she woke up the next morning, sleepiness was driven away from her eyes when she heard a hearty laugh that came from the living room which startled her.
''That must be Mary's husband'' she said to herself as she walked to the living room to welcome him.
''This must be the much talked about Mary'' he said as she entered the room.
''Yes dear. She is gonna stay with us for sometime cos something came up in back at the ranch.'' Betty said.
''Okay. Hope she enjoys her stay'' he said as he stood up from where he was seated and went to take his shower.

But there was something that seemed strange in the way Jerry welcomed her. Especially in the way he eyed her and licked his lips as he gazed at the contours of her body. From that minute she had this feeling that something bad was going to happen. Things went on well for sometime but one day, as she was peeling some oranges in her room, Jerry came into her room. Mary on seeing him, put away the oranges that she was peeling and turned to give him attention. He stood at the door for sometime, eyeing her seductively.

''See Mary'' he cleared his throat as he began
'' I've being having this feeling for you ever since you stepped into this house. Let me tell you point blank that i am in love with you'' he said with a quaver in his voice
''But what about Betty? Mary asked looking at him wide eyed.
''Never bother about her. If we play our cards right, she won't suspect a thing. He said
And with this, he edged closer to her and made to touch her breast but was greeted with a slap.
''You dare slap me?!'' he said as he unbuckled his belt to make for the easy removal of his trousers.
Mary seeing this, was fully on her guard and warned him not to come any closer to her. But by that time, he was already blinded by lust and pounced on her. He pinned her down and was about to UnCloth her when she reached for the knife that she used in peeling the oranges and stabbed his neck. Blood gushed out of his neck and unto her body as he gasped for breath and died.
