I think the phone previously used a sprint Sim

You bought a network locked fone. You'll have to unlock it, and am guessing that will cost you money. Take it to someone who does that.

Always seek for advice or research about the process of unlocking any phone u intend to buy beforehand.
Most sprint and verizon phones cannot be unlocked via code.

Hmmmm... Sprint is CDMA. Their phones can be unlocked to be used on GSM networks but not all and it is not usually easy. Try visiting the xda-developers page for your device, maybe you could get a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve that. That was where I got for my Sprint Samsung Note 2
