Two MotoAmerica racers died on Sunday, just moments after the start of the second MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

According to the racing series, Bernat Martinez, 35, of Alberic, Valencia, Spain, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, of Moana Galicia, Spain, died at area hospitals as a result of the crash.

"I really don't have any words to describe what we all feel," said MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey. "First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers."

MotoAmerica is a new North American road racing series created that started in 2014.

"We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas," added Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. "Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams."

MotoAmerica was formerly known as the American Motorcycle Association Superbike races, which typically ran as support races to MotoGP races in previous years.

This comes after Formula 1 driver, Jules Bianchi passed away last Friday at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Nice, some nine and a half months after his accident in the Japanese Grand Prix.
