Have you ever mocked a potential future employer on social media? Well now might be the time to delete it.

Because footballer Julio Rey has seen a dream transfer to Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna collapse – after they discovered he abuse them on Twitter three years ago.

Deportivo announced the signing of Rey from Arosa SC over the weekend, but have since issued a statement saying they have cancelled the move at the last minute after discovering the tweet.

Rey apparently posted ‘puta Depor’ – translated as ‘f**k Depor’ – on Twitter after a match in 2012, and it was discovered by Deportivo staff who monitor the club’s players and future signings online.

In a statement on their website, the club say they took the decision to cancel Rey’s move after deciding he wouldn’t respect the shirt.

Deportivo's official statement of Julio Rey
‘Deportivo, who announced the signing of Julio Rey this week, has decided not to complete the deal after finding unfortunate comments made by the player on a personal profile online,’ the statement read.

‘Deportivo understands that a player should wear the blue and white shirt must be an example of sportsmanship, have respect for opponents, commitment and positive sentiment towards the Depor , its colors, its shield and the values that the institution represents.’

Rey is yet to give his side of the story, but has deleted his Twitter account will no doubt feel pretty stupid about his social media antics now.

What do you think? Is Deportivo's decision harsh or understandable?
