In a latest university ranking by the Center For World University Ranking Show, none of Nigeria numerous universities made at least the first 1000 best universities in the world.

The ranking was done by the Centre for World University Rankings show. The center uses eight objective indicators to rank the world’s top 1,000 universities which are quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, publications, influence, citations, broad impact and patents.

The United States of America has eight universities in the top 10.

Harvard University is ranked first while Stanford University ranked second, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technolog as third.

University of Cambridge came forth while the University of Oxford was ranked fifth.

The University of Witwatersrand in South Africa was the highest ranked university in Africa which ranked 149th followed by Mansoura University in Egypt which emerged 988th.

In an earlier ranking done by Journals Consortium, only one Nigerian university made it to the list of top 10 African universities.

Nigeria’s University of Ibadan beaten by six South African schools was ranked eight on the list.

The Center for World University Rankings publishes the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students, as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

Its not shocking. The trend has been on since God knows when. Our education system needs serious improvement. In other places it takes a max of 8months to obtain an Msc degree while here, 18months is a feat

How do you expect us to make It among the first 1000 universities in the world when our gullible stupid leaders don't believe in Nigerian Education?

Always sending there kids abroad to school. Why don't they school here?

Something has to be done about our educational system. It really saddens me when I read something like this.

Not surprised a bit!
The verdict of the ranking system speaks for itself. If our universities cannot feature among the best 1000 in the world, then there is something fundamentally deficient in the system. What is the quality of research that goes on the universities? Are there research opportunities and facilities in the universities? If there are, are these research findings published in reputable journals across the world? Does this not re-echo the call of the nation's eggheads that the universities need resuscitation through a massive injection of funds? Numerous problems beset Nigerian universities. May God help us.

Because .....no MONEY.

Most of the top universities in the world have lots of money.Money is the root of all evil. It is also what buys you top class facilties, funds research, funds nice libraries, funds nice student digs, funds all those top class sports facilities (the other day, an American college spent 77million dollars on sports facilities.)....and gets you good lecturers.(Lots of the staff at Harvard are Nobel Laureates. Think they came cheap?).

And all those top universities don't come cheap. You pay high fees....up to thousands of dollars every year...to access that top class education (If you are poor need based aid comes in,but that's another tale).

In Nigeria, most universities are lucky to see $10million every year (UCLA sees $250million, Norway' s second largest sees $800million). And government runs most of these universities on limited funding. And fees are kept low.

This leaves many universities looking like malnourished kwashiorkor victims (OK...hyperbole). And we cannot find extra cash for them because your govt has run out of money thanks to our oil dependent economy. And corruption messes things up too....but even if that went, we would still have just a little extra. And we do not have enough lecturers.

So...no money...means no facilities, no books...nothing.

If you want to be in the top 100, even 1000...

1.Privatise the universities. We have no choice.

2.Increase fees.(and taxes) Again no choice.

3.Need based grants for poor students, payable over decades.

4.If 1-3 are not palatable....pray that Buhari finds N10trillion in the next five years just for universities (This years budget for Nigeria was N4 trillion). Or pray we get a diversified economy so that we have the cash

5.If 1-3 are palatable...then redirect funding to the primary, secondary and technical education. We need more technicians really. And it is not a shameful job as some Nigerians think it is.

Sorry Nigerians....but while we need to beat corruption....we also have to make the hard choices. We do not have the money. It costs N150000 yearly to train a undergraduate. Do you have the money?

The ranking is skewed. Most people tend not to take the list seriously except for the first 100.

Worrying news. How come Jonathan claimed he helped education by giving us more below standard universities when those we have can't compete with universities formed same time ?
